What, of any of these, are we fighting for in Iran, half a world away from the US? The DoD can’t even articulate what objectives the administration intends to achieve, and neither can the State Dept, apparently.

3·20 hours agoI was about to say, isn’t this the same thing that closed down Gawker? Even if it’s accurate, Thiel can flood the courts with paperwork and effectively commit paper terrorism on the company to draw proceedings out and eventually bankrupt them on legal fees alone.

News@lemmy.world•Trump bashed for using Mar-a-Lago 'blanket fort' to monitor Iran strikes
3·24 hours agoNah, Trump hates the WH. Wants to be as far from DC as he can, because he’s insulated from actual people at Mar-A-Lago. It’s his Versailles, truly - he loves that he only has to hear sycophancy there, and basically forcing his Cabinet to relocate there for months while he governs from there is probably a huge power trip for him.

News@lemmy.world•4Chan knew about Jeffrey Epstein's death 38 minutes before the rest of the world. The FBI tried to figure out how.
5·4 days agoSee, this is my take as well - other people knew/guessed his passwords and used his account that way. Keeping him alive really doesn’t do anything for the “it’s all a coverup” story, especially when a LOT of his associates and contacts are getting tangled up in this release of his files. Additionally, this guy was talking so openly about manipulating markets, sex crimes, and all sorts of legal and quasi legal shit that I find it hard to imagine that EVEN IF he was connected to Israeli intelligence like has been suggested, EVEN IF he got spirited out of prison and away to Tel Aviv, I find it hard to imagine Mossad would want to keep such a DEEPLY compromised asset alive instead of driving him into the Negev and putting two bullets in the back of his head.

News@lemmy.world•US aims to bring in 4,500 white South Africans per month as refugees, document says
8·4 days agoThere’s a lot of white supremacists and hate groups there that have active ties to hate groups here in the US. Many white South Africans were and are not happy with the fact that their racial hierarchy got scrapped.

News@lemmy.world•TN Hospital Denies Woman Sterilization Surgery, Citing Her “Sacred Fertility”
20·5 days agoBecause a lot of times in the Bad Old Days, the Church was really one of the few ways to get healthcare in a rural area. Tons of places in Tennessee and the rural South were pretty much just forgotten about, and the Catholics capitalized on this by actually doing good Christian stuff - you know, healing the sick and helping the poor and all the things Jesus talks about in Matthew during the Sermon on the Mount.
Now it’s turned into a battleground for the Church’s values, especially moreso as the American Catholic Church seems to want to actively schism away from the RCC.

4·6 days agobe a citizen to own a home, etc
That’s part of the point, eventually. You just start narrowing who’s a “citizen” from there. It’s why they want to get rid of birthright citizenship so badly, because then you can make up whatever test you like, and potentially even say “alright, NOBODY is a citizen unless you go and present yourself for racial profiling/pass a test/etc” or whatever.

You stick useless people in these important roles so they can’t get enough traction to try for your chair, but you also want people who are at least smart enough to do whatever you tell them to do. Yeah, if they’re wanting to do the old castle thing, they forget castles had funny things like ways to produce food and unblockable access to clean water.

The issue is the precedent. It means my state can do it. Nevada can do it. Texas can do it.
Never mind that the CIA’s role doesn’t only include surveillance. What’s to stop another governor or lawmaker from deciding the Florida Intelligence Services need assassination protocols, to start killing off anti-Florida assets? What’s to stop them deciding they need sabotage capabilities to destroy infrastructure that is detrimental to the Florida way of life?
