I’m a determinist so, yeah, I agree, I don’t think you can change the future. But I don’t think it does any good to be depressed about it. We don’t know what the future’s going to be, but I don’t think it’s guaranteed to be a dystopian nightmare. I think there’s a good chance the future could be hard, but hard times can bring about a lot of important changes.

politics @lemmy.world•Most Americans support switch to Medicare for all health insurance
41·3 days agoWhen told such a single-payer model would eliminate private insurance plans, that overall support dropped to 52% — still well ahead of the 37% favorability seen in the 2020 survey.
That’s weird to me. Are people really that impressed with their private insurance plans? Because I’ve had several private plans in my life and none of them were better than Medicare, for the price.

445·6 days agoWe need to go to permanent standard time. Just fall back on November 1st and never change the clocks again.
Capitalists only believe in free markets when it benefits them. When free markets work against them, they become state planners real fast.

14·8 days agoTrump brushed aside the likelihood of Democrats winning, telling Time magazine that, so long as he campaigns with candidates, Republicans could perform well.
Trump might not trust the polls but I bet he trusts polymarket, and it’s currently showing 63% chance of Democrats taking the Senate and 93% of Dems taking the House.

Electric Vehicles@slrpnk.net•Chevrolet Bolt Dies Next Year After A Disappointing Return
21·9 days agoThe US EV market is pathetic. Half of all EV sales are just two Tesla models. All the other auto makers are competing for the other half, of a shrinking pie. That pie isn’t big enough for Chevy to offer both a small electric SUV and an electric subcompact SUV, that’s in a similar price range. The Equinox EV is the better selling model so it makes sense they’d keep that one and ditch the Bolt.

11·11 days agoI was looking at the new Slate truck and that at least looks somewhat promising
Yeah, the Slate is interesting. The fact that it doesn’t have a massive infotainment screen is itself enough to keep me intrigued. I’m not an early adopter, though. I’m going to see how their first model run goes, at least.

politics @lemmy.world•Trump administration lowers fuel economy standards, critics say at a significant environmental cost
31·11 days agoThanks to President Trump’s leadership, we have finally ended the illegal mandate that forced automakers to produce more expensive electric vehicles that American families didn’t want,” Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy said in a statement touting vehicle affordability, vehicle safety and investment in American auto workers.
Damn straight! If my car or truck ain’t big, loud, inefficient, polluting and running exclusively on completely nonrenewable, expensive to refine, 100 million year old fossil goo, I ain’t interested! Who cares if only less than 25% of the energy contained in a tank of gas is actually used to move my car, while the other 75%+ is totally wasted as heat. Efficiency is for nerds.
Seriously, though, I really don’t want an expensive EV. I want an affordable EV. We need more of those.
I don’t think you really understand what “woke” is. Being woke is about critical analysis of traditional, established power hierarchies. Hierarchies like white supremacy, patriarchy or class. Maybe some neoliberals, to their credit, want to abolish traditional racial and gender hierarchies, and that’s good, but they certainly do not want to abolish the hierarchy of rich over poor, or capital over labor.
Is it, though?
Neoliberalism isn’t everything I don’t like, but it is a big one.

311·14 days agoLook, my point is that they have options. If legitimate criticism of the genocide being carried out by Jewish Zionists makes them uncomfortable, they do not have to stay here and listen to it. I’m not saying they can’t stay here, I’m not saying they should be expelled or forcibly deported, nor am I condoning or advocating for discrimination or harassment against Jewish people in general, I’m saying those Jewish people who are uncomfortable here, for whatever, reason do not have to stay here. No slippery slope or reading between the lines, that’s it.

371·14 days agoWell, that’s why the state of Israel was formed, so Jews all over the world would have a place to go if they feel unsafe where they are. All the genocidal colonialism was for nothing if they’re not even going to use it for what it was intended for.

We need to start a petition to bar the NFC South from playing in primetime. No one wants to see that nonsense.
