I’d say Rolex Explorer 36mm is a good grail for most people. But my personal pick would be the Nomos World Timer. Both can be found <$5k grey or used.

It’s not as simple as homage=fake. Replicas with the genuine branding are 100% fake and illegal to buy/sell. If they have their own brand name clearly labeled, it’s legal. It’s not trying to deceive anyone on close inspection.

Are Smiths and Steinhart fake watches too? Or do they get a pass because they have “heritage” and use Swiss parts and are assembled in UK and Germany?

It’s a gray line but it’s an important distinction.
