I think a lot of people (myself included) don’t really think Google fell behind in the ml space but rather didn’t manage to capitalize on their own invention.

It’s more a business side issue rather than a R&D one.

Also deep mind, although owned by Google is a separate entity.

OpenAI has a history of hyping the hell out of their discoveries. Remember GPT-2 that they didn’t want to release because it was too powerful but turns out it was pretty bad and they released GPT3 anyway?

To be fair, 5 year Olds don’t have the innate ability to know how tic tac toe works. Someone had to teach them. We just chose not to teach that to llms.
