Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's the most unexpectedly useful item you've ever bought under $20?
211·10 months agoBe careful with a stungun. It requires close range confrontation, and It’s not effective if the assailant is drugged up or heavily drunk and ignores the shocks.
Mace gives good distance, and pepper in the eyes doesn’t care about the stimulants in your blood stream.
Also practice with it. A large number of people carry self defense tools and choke under pressure/fail to use it correctly during situations.

politics @lemmy.world•Department of Homeland Security announces $94 million in grants to protect Jewish organizations
11·10 months agoSecretary Kristi Noem and the Department of Homeland Security announced $94 million in federal grants to over 500 Jewish-based organizations across the United States.
Fuck Noem and her ICE bullshit.
I welcome this. Jewish Americans have been wrongfully threatened over things Israel has been doing. Jewish Americans (the many im friends with) hate the Israel govt’s actions and leaned heavily Democrat. Temple were getting weekly bomb scares during 2024, and there’s been lots of harassment and physical violence. They walked alongside of us during BLM and No Kings.
I wish this was extended to the Muslim community. But of course, we know why it’s not.

Progressive Politics@lemmy.world•Democrats Shocked By Success Of Left-Wing Candidate Offering Left-Wing Policies To Left-Wing Voters
151·10 months agoI have two points to add to this:
1 - As a liberal, there was nothing more frustrating than having to vote for Kamala, a candidate who was aggressively “pro-cop”, especially as many in the country were protesting for defunding cops. Youre not going to energize most people with an angle like “You want us to vote to stop Trump?”
2 - As a person who is part of the black/immigrant community, the government has a history of ignoring us for decades. It’s not the federal government, but the local government too. Systematic racism has always kept us down. And I hate to say it, Trump got a wall going. Trump has ICE harassing immigrants. These are newsworthy events, even if they’re in the wrong fucking direction. But a Democrat has a history of never wanting to create a ripple as they appeal to all sides.
America won the war against smoking in restaurants, which is nice.
Maybe we won because we didn’t actually have a war.

6·10 months agoA decade ago, Australia rolled out where they have a right to check your phones and laptops. So company trips, it was always recommended to bring burners/reformatted devices. So that’s been my norm.
I’ve been doing that for years and would strongly recommend it.

2·10 months agoCurious, where did you move?
There’s a lot involved with moving out of the US. The easiest route is Canada. But trying to move to Europe is a uphill battle unless you’re a skilled worker. Even worse in Asia, where unless you’re there with a suitcase of money, you’re probably going to be working from the ground floor.
Wife and two kids here, and I am looking for options but every where seems difficult.
