Instagram, I barely used it and I saw a lot of dumb stuff and a lot of AI content. Incredibly users seem to like that kind of garbage where a guy yells for some reasons or the AI slop content. People repost some of that content from Instagram and TikTok to Reddit. I never understood why they need to yell, do ridiculous things and all that on some actual useful information making it unbearable to watch.

Well apparently not everyone gave in, lots of people deleted their accounts, comments and moved to lemmy.

I also don’t like Discord because of the leadership, close source, centralized, pushing nitro, not dealing with groomers and pushing age verification. I use matrix instead because it fixes those problem and it’s mostly the same.

Letting ChatGPT train on all the reddit content without users approving, changing the UI for the worse, not letting you browse reddit or old reddit without an account (you can still browse if you have ublock origin, worked for me), making the reddit app more similar to instagram and tiktok, and making decisions that help the bots while blocking actual users.

Most of them stayed because they where already using the main reddit app so it wasn’t something that hurt them and didn’t care that much about the API, but with these updates it affects every user and made the experience worse for everyone.

To be fair I got banned multiple times and I also deleted my accounts because of how the mods and reddit operates, shadow banning my comments, banning my account without giving me a reason while actual bots roam the site. I also didn’t like the big communities because of their rules and hidden rules and the mods being horrible and power hungry. One of my account got banned, probably because I posted a picture of Charlie Kirk as a fountain and making fun of him. I liked some subs like r/embedded or r/arduino but it’s not worth keeping an account for them. I hated the mods of the big subreddits and i coudn’t make my own subreddit because reddit would ban me. I hate mods and reddit for their double standards, applying the rules for me but not for others.

You don’t need the entire userbase or even close to the entire userbase. Just enough to make it lose more money then charging for the API. The shareholders are money driven.

Yes, I said many times that there are a lot of bots and reddit knows and supports them because it creates traffic. Many post are recycled with nearly the same titles and the comments are generic and obviously made by bots.

I use Voyager and the main complain I have is that it doesn’t have push notifications. They said that it will be implemented but idk when.

I think the main problems with any new social media is the lack of users at the start. You offer the best features but it’s still garbage if you don’t already have a lot of users. As you said, Lemmy could add a lot of features that would help massively and that’s the main advantage, Lemmy is open-source and decentralized and is much easier to make those changes possible without any “leader” approval.

It looks like reddit users don’t have a saying and are not willing to force the CEO to implement some much needed changes and if the CEO decides one day to change something, well then to bad, you gotta get used to it because there’s nothing you can do about it. The CEO and everyone that works at reddit cares about the shareholders and not the actual users.

Lemmy is not perfect but I think it’s way better then reddit and has a bigger potential. Maybe one day Lemmy will be bigger then reddit or twitter. Getting the users is the hardest part.
