We have no way of proving anything is actually deleted on their devices. When they get a copy of our data, nothing will bring that copy back.

Autonomous User@lemmy.worldto Privacy@lemmy.ml•Matrix? No, thanks. — Hackea documentacióEnglish1·17 days agoLibre software doesn’t mean we control what other people do with their devices. Run it on your devices. The App Store and Google Play Store is not libre. Get it yourself. Apps should have reproducible builds. Everything there misses the point of my original comment.

Why are we dismissing this as privacy versus anonymity when governments are blocking the registration SMS?English24·17 days agoYou were given the evidence. It’s clear you don’t want evidence. A VoIP number does not solve this as the original post already explains.

Wrong. It’s libre software. We users control it.
Autonomous User@lemmy.worldOPto Privacy@lemmy.ml•Signal needs a phone number. Why are we dismissing this as privacy versus anonymity when governments are blocking the registration SMS?English53·17 days agoThe point is that people can’t sign up for Signal due to blocked SMS. Arguing privacy versus anonymity is pointless when there is a denial of service.
Autonomous User@lemmy.worldOPto Privacy@lemmy.ml•Signal needs a phone number. Libre software has never meant we control what other people do with their servers.
Autonomous User@lemmy.worldOPto Privacy@lemmy.ml•Signal needs a phone number. Why are we dismissing this as privacy versus anonymity when governments are blocking the registration SMS?English71·17 days agoYes but Signal is libre. If you’re already failing, stop making it harder. Get others to care first, then go for decentralisation.

But you’re right about decentralisation. The main issue is:
Great! We do not control GitHub, anti-libre software.
Libre software is unstoppable.
