I would go a step further. Block notifications from the vast majority of apps. Besides messaging apps, there are very few apps that I need to see any notifications for. Even for apps like Lemmy, replies and DMs can be seen when the app is next opened, no need to bother me before I’m going to open the app anyway.

I’ve even got WhatsApp blocked. My wife and closest family are on Signal anyway. Any messages on WhatsApp can wait. I never go longer than 30 to 60 min without checking my phone anyway so I’ll check into WhatsApp from time to time. So far, without notifications, nothing bad has happened for the past year.

In case you’re a masochist like me and want a lot more work on your hands, then you could remove the whole laptop mobo and make its own case and make it more compact in the process.

I’ve done this recently to make a standalone machine out of a busted laptop. This can give you a single, more compact unit with all the parts inside. You can improve the cooling and noise too (by using desktop fans). You’ll maintain your laptop resale value too by not destroying the case and being able to put the mobo back in place in the future. Infact, with today’s ram prices, the reason I went down this route is because you can get broken laptops with soldered in DDR5 ram.

Entirely paper packaging. I would argue this really is optimal packaging. I’ve got an air tight glass jar that I decant to.

Where I work you can only work temporarily for 2 years before they automatically get a permanent contract (it’s UK law basically). I got a colleague come to me for support yesterday saying he’s been told his contract won’t be renewed beyond 1year+11months and they’re going to advertise to hire another person into the role (presumably for another 1 yr + 11 m).
