How can you call it absurd when we have no idea what makes something conscious in the first place?

But cleaning the basket vs cleaning a baking tray?
You can store the heat in oil, but how do you transfer it into cooking oil? It’s not like you can store it directly in cooking oil since it breaks down with heat.
How and why does this happen? I have more torrents stuck at 99.9% than anywhere else combined.

It’s not an operation. OP is working with a field where {√, 2} is a subset of that field’s elements.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Property taxes should be proportional to the number of homes you own
2·1 month agoI’m beginning to think the entire tax system was designed by a committee of people who were locked in a room with a calculator and told to make everything as unnecessarily complicated as humanly possible.
There’s a good chance that they chose the simplest method where “simple” means the easiest to understand change set, not the easiest to understand overall system. People usually have an easier time understanding small changes.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What is the easiest way to calculate the calories in this bread machine recipe?
2·1 month agoAh, gotcha. I thought you meant you looked up “whole wheat bread nutrition” and used those results to verify. Not that it would’ve made any more sense to offer that value as an answer since there’s so much variation in what can be considered whole wheat bread.

Flour alone already has enough carbohydrates to feed the yeast. Most basic breads are made with just flour, water, yeast, and salt.

If that debt is accruing interest, it might be a good idea to do that to get out of debt while you still can. The deeper you go, the harder it is to get out. That’ll let you help your friends in the future without as much of a negative impact on your own situation.
That’s the point of having savings. You could just as easily ask yourself what you would do if you spent 2k on car repairs and suddenly your friend urgently needs financial assistance the next day. If you need to spend that money, then you spend it. If you can’t, then you deal with the consequences.

New Communities@lemmy.world•A community to discuss about sortition, a type of governance where officials are chosen by lottery.English
2·2 months agoI don’t see how that’s better than just having a large representative body and counting all votes. The expected value of a bribe is still the same no matter what percentage of the votes are counted, but a lower percentage also increases the variance such that one bribe has a chance of having a big impact on the voting outcome, whereas if you count all the votes, a single bribe will only ever have a small effect.

How did you determine that it’s a discrete phenomenon? If I present you with another person, how do you determine if they’re conscious or not?
