A lot of people overblowing this in the replies right now. Machine-id is mainly used by fleet admins at companys to manage individual devices, to generate system application keys, or tag logs (and yes systemD provides this file, but so does dbus and many non systemD applications depend on it). Chrome and Firefox might access your machine-id but their also tracking you in much worse ways by default aswell, if you care about privacy your probably already using an alternative browser that dosent use your machine-id

The problem isnt windows or linux having a machine-id but that your applications are not properally sandboxed (flatpak does not sandbox /etc by default, so no, flatpak is not a solution) or that your using applications that handle security poorly

Alpine is amazingly small compared to other bare bones distros, but that saved 10mb of ram doesn’t mean much when your desktop and browser are using a gig

Personally I use pure wireguard, but it was a nightmare to setup when your working overtime (in the USA). Sometimes people need a simple binary that just connects without any further research, but I will admit now that I know wireguard it feels incredibly simple

Real easy answer: keeping a fridge cool during a very hot summer outside requires a more powerful cooling system. Instead most people have a powerful AC since you want the house cool anyway, with a cheaper fridge cooling system

The reverse is also true. You wouldnt want your fridge to require a heater installed in it to keep your food from freezing in esspecially cold winters

This is what I fear though. Every relationship I’ve had I’ve been the “stepping stone”. I treated them nicley enough to where they wanted their first relationship, first time, etc. And then they realized they wanted something else after experimenting with me. I dont resent anyone for it, but now that im out of school and working full time all I wanted was someone to stay. KDE is commited to keeping the desktop itself SystemD agnostic. Their new login manager does depend on SystemD, but you can run KDE Plasma from any login manager

SystemD isnt exactly a program but more of a group of projects, the only “core” SystemD software on most distros is the init system… Which you can run completely without SystemD’s UserDB system (the part being talked about in the post).

Basically this means you as a user dont have to do anything but switch away from projects that depend on SystemD’s UserDB (like Gnome), not SystemD as a whole

However if you do want to move away from SystemD as a whole you can replace your init system with another one, gentoo’s wiki is a good starting point for learning a bit more: wiki. Personally I love using openrc but of you have no need to touch init files… Dont switch

I love vim/nvim but I’ve gotten used to using VIM more as a text editor then an IDE. Writing a script? Taking notes? Maybe even a small program? VIM all the way. Working on a big project that needs an LSP? Either spend the next 20 hours fucking with your VIM config and 20 plugins to get basic functionality… Or just open VSCode and install one plugin

Heres to hoping since NVIM 0.11 with their LSP overhaul I can finnally make the full switch

I’ve just never encountered a problem with focus stealing or alt-tab issues and leave my drawing tablet/second display plugged in. My friend who runs side by side monitors also has no problems on their arch kde setup. Might just be a weird hardware+application combination problem for some

Edit: try digging in the kde focus settings, I think theres an option to tune focus steeling
