  • but also have to be weary of the fact that some of them are just posing and scamming.

The amount of people doing this is infinitesimal compared to the actual homeless population. This is basically a right-wing talking point to undercut empathy with people who are experiencing homelessness.

Also you should never feel bad for not giving a panhandler money, but if you feel called to do more, just find an organization to volunteer with. There are people facing homelessness right now or in the near future in every urban and rural area in the US

  • Towin Mak, a representative from the educator center that owned the robot, explained to TDM that the incident happened as the robot was leaving the area. The woman stopped in the middle of the walkway to check her phone, and because the robot couldn’t get around, it simply waited behind her, he claimed. That’s when she noticed the robot with its lights on, startling her, given the late hour.

If I discovered a robot standing silently behind me on the street, I would also have a lil’ freakout

  • So I work with people experiencing homelessness, and can tell you with authority that there are often times when we know someone meets criteria for guardianship and would genuinely benefit from it, however they have no known next of kin and the alternative state-initiated process can take years.

Based on what I’m reading, they’re not talking about seeking guardianship for someone just for being homeless, they’re talking about people who have debilitating medical or psychiatric conditions, which often co-occur with homelessness. I think this is a good thing, and I wish my state would support enhanced guardianship capacity for the civilians who need this.

I notice the title posted here has been edited to remove “some” homeless veterans, which was already doing the heavy lifting as clickbait for the NYT. This effort is clearly not aimed at homeless veterans, but some homeless veterans may be impacted if they meet guardianship criteria.

  • Was this war so hastily planned that this was overlooked?

Planned isn’t the term that I think should be applied to what the US is doing. Iran has been planning how to make an attack on their land as painful for the world as possible for a long time. They know their military can’t compete, so they utilize strategy to make an outsized impact. There is no “mine facility” to bomb, they have thousands of mines in decentralized storage. All of this, including Iran’s plans to make this painful, is public information that the US military had access to.

The unfortunate reality is the civilian leadership in charge of planning this are fucking idiots. Pete Hegseth, Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, and Donald Trump are fucking morons. They know jack shit about any of this but are running our foreign policy.

The Trump Admin is doing the bidding of Israel here, hands down, as influenced by Israel’s assets within the US government, such as certain members of Congress, who have plainly stated as much. Israel doesn’t care about oil prices, they care about destroying Iran and an ancillary goal: As we speak, Israel has displaced almost a million people in Lebanon and is clearly about to annex Lebanese land. This is a footnote in the news because of Trump’s actions in Iran, but would have garnered international condemnation otherwise.

You’re just plain wrong. Figs and fig wasps have been coevolving for millions of years, and this is just how these species of fig and wasp evolved. Lots of animals have evolved to die after they reproduce. This is nature and has nothing to do with commercial fig growers
