  • I do better with light-based over-stimulation than I did in my early 20s, but I have a lot more trouble with sounds. There’s a retailer here in Japan that has its store music (loud), various TVs and other devices playing separate ads at the same time at high volume, and just people noise that leads to a cacophony that triggers my fight-or-flight. I can’t go in there for long without noise-cancelling headphones. My brain I think tries to listen to everything at once and can’t separate things out leading to issues; I hear them all so I can’t listen to or discern any one of them (which is a more general issue I have that gets worse as I get older trying to hear people over any background noise).

  • I moved to Japan where knives are also heavily restricted. If you live in Japan, you need a permit to purchase anything with a fixed blade over 15cm and it must be kept in the home. You can’t legally carry a pocket knife with a blade longer than 6cm (I think 8cm if it’s a folding but not fixed blade) and even then, if stopped, you need to have a specific reason for carrying it around.

It was really weird to me, as someone who carried a pocket knife basically everywhere. I did learn, though, that “in case I need to open boxes” is a case that has come up like twice in 10 years.

As for guns here, handguns are not allowed at all. There are licenses for airguns (pellet guns), rifles, and shotguns. Separately, there are licenses for trapping and hunting that do grant some permissions outside of what I wrote above (hunting/trapping license but no gun license means you’re going to be killing your catch with knife, spear, strangulation, drowning, or electrocution).

  • I no longer live in the US in part for reasons I wouldn’t have a child there.

    • inequality increasing
    • education costs increasing
    • low employee protections
    • ridiculous and expensive healthcare system
    • few or poor social and community programs (not just social safety net but also libraries, public transit, etc.)
    • environmental and other protections backsliding

Because of many of those, I left. The secondary reasons for not having my own biological kids are some medical issues I have and, by the time I was stable enough, I was already coming into my 40s. I had considered adoption, but ultimately decided not to do that, either.

  • I had tons of hours in it. In either a19 or a20, they added these dumb triggers that just spawn an entire world of zombies or open a set of doors with the zombies aggro’d to the player already effectively killing stealth. Worse, there’s no way to know about any of this until you’re in the POI and getting obliterated. I haven’t touched the game since them and was quite angry.
