A fair warning: FIDESZ fucked with Magyar and his wife, so he fucked FIDESZ big time.

DeGoogle Yourself@lemmy.ml•Trying to degoogle how am I doing..... minus CoDM. Mostly fossify apps
17·1 month agoGood. Good. Fossify has its own apps for clock, sms, phone and gallery. There’s Ghost Commander for file management (its like Total Commander for Android) or Material Files on F-Droid. Alsi, I use Graphene’s camera app. How do you do syncing or cloud storage?
Once R brcomes unusable without this, I’m leaving it completely. I just hope many will do the same.
Kvaesitso and Lawnchair are launchers that get recommended a lot. I prefer LaunchTime. Unexpected Keyboard is my favorite, minimalist but great. All of these are on F-Droid,
Arkona, because I don’t speak Russian. Palmetta, because it’s so beautiful.
Primary: Fennec (F-Droid), IceRaven, IronFox. Vivaldi as a secondary.
Mainly my shitty memory. I have photos of events like family meetings, birthdays, holidays on my phones SD card. I manually save things like contacts, not-so-important notes to my SD card. Copy my stuff to my PC every now and then (2 mo. usually). My important notes are on paper written with a several-thousand-year-old script.
1, Find out whether she needs any specific piece of software that is hard to replace. 2, Regarding distro, you should install her what you use, so it is easier for you to help. Ubuntu is well hated for a reason though (Canonical doing big tech things). I’d recommend either Linux Mint or Debian (if you are not a beginner in Linux and comfortable in the termunal) for both of you, but I’d wait until she passes her exams and may consider setting up a dual-boot on a spare SSD first, so she is able to try Linux and go back to Windows when needed. 3, Desktop environment: GNOME is considered best for ones coming from Apple and KDE from Windows. Both are resource hungry in my opinion, so I use MATE, which looks like GNOME 2 out of the box and uses a bit more resources than Xfce, well configurable though. Note that Ubuntu MATE is its flagship edition, many options are there out of the box (like MATE tweak).

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Does anybody use Ubuntu Touch as their daily driver? If not, what other......
2·9 months agoCalyx seems to be the best option for you. https://calyxos.org/ Next time you buy a phone (and live in the EU), you may consider Volla. It’s degoogled Android by default and dual-bootable with an SD card, so yo can try other OSes while keeping your daily driver.
Andromeda Linux around 2009. It had cool astronomy based theme and animation.
Thick (~1m) mudbrick walls. I lived in a house like that for 2 years, it felt cold inside in summer.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•does anyone else’s family think their ambitions/goals are “stupid”?
10·1 year agoYup. I’ve been listening to ‘You shouldn’t be an astronomer, you can’t make money as one’. Now I work at the state railways, I constantly have myself sent to school like driving a maintenance engine. You guessed right right I also got the ‘don’t work at the railways’. There’s not much of my family I contact these days.
Debian for me and Linux Mint Debian Edition for anyone I help with computers, because I don’t want to configure a system more than once and to investigate why some stuff doesn’t work.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•What's your opinion on telegram from a foss and privacy perspective?
2·3 years agoIt’s one step better than whatsapp, fb messenger and viber. I use Signal with my family and friends, it’s a middle ground between the big ones and XMPP.

Linux@lemmy.ml•What was your first experience using Linux? How old were you? Stick around or did you go back to windows before eventually circling back to Linux?
2·3 years agoIt was 2009 and I was 14. I had been using Ubuntu on my father’s PC for a year and I installed Andromeda Linux (an Ubuntu fork with a stunning theme), completely wiping my HDD. The next day I installed Windows and attempted my second Linux install, I was more careful and got a doual boot working.

I’m always missing Conversations/Dino (XMPP) from chat apps. It does (almost) everything Signal/Matrix does but without a phone number and it can run on a potato.
