Trust me, I am all too familiar with losing hope in humanity as I get older and more cynical. That doesn’t mean I want to spend my time watching a show about torture and misery and sadness and hopelessness. I want something better out of fiction than I get out of real life. Otherwise, what’s even the point?

I’ve never watched Picard myself, but the the main thing I took away from watching the video was that the person who made it loved TNG for being a show that tried to take a realistic look at our problems and present a fun show about a world where we have found solutions for them, while inspiring people all over the world, including the person who made the video, to become scientists and engineers. Meanwhile Picard is a show that is miserable and hopeless and will never inspire anyone to do anything. Also it just wasn’t well written.

That’s just my personal main take away from a single video about a show I haven’t watched, so take that for what it’s worth.

I tried out Gentoo for a while, and just using binaries for the web browser and office suite made the compile times a complete non-issue. The problem I had that made me give it up was that when there is software you want that isn’t in the official repos there are a thousand different ways of getting it, and all of them suck. Overlays are supposed to be the solution for that, but man that experience was just awful.

I tried all kinds of things, but in the end all the options basically boiled down to risking breakage, maintaining my own packages, or not using emerge at all, which just feels like it’s defeating the whole purpose of being on Gentoo in the first place.

Nobody here is saying that ads are good. We’re saying this disingenuous fascist is only saying these things because he can’t make any money from ads. If he was making ad money he’d be saying exactly the opposite of all this. Fascists don’t have any morals but power for power’s sake. That’s what fascism IS.

Look, if you love declarative systems that’s cool. I’m genuinely happy for you that you have much better options now. That can only be good.

That being said, they only solve problems that I don’t have. I do not care even the tiniest amount about whether a system is declarative or not, and I’m definitely not going to go out of my way to seek them out. If you want to call that “out of touch” then so be it.

At this point I’m starting to think that if you want to subsidize semiconductor manufacturing in the US the Global Foundries might be a better investment. At least they’ve already hit rock bottom.

People discriminate against each other for all kinds of stupid reasons. Yeah, the word racism gets used for groups that aren’t actually genetic in nature sometimes. Let’s not be pedantic about the terminology used to describe discrimination against groups that have been the victims of genocide though.

I mean, it’s not a group famous for their high rate of desktop computer use, but the ones that do actually make that a significant part of their life tend to be pretty likely to use Linux in my experience.

All the security updates are in the microcode loaded by the bootloader even before the kernel is loaded, so unless there’s some new feature, bugfix, or hardware support you specifically know you need it’s not important to update your BIOS anyway. Which is good, because as far as I can tell you’re just screwed by a bad hardware vendor.

Third world actually came from the cold war. There were the two major sides, but then there was a whole bunch of countries that weren’t really on either side. A whole “third world”. Of course, a lot of those countries were poor, so the term came to be associated with that, but there really isn’t a coherent definition of what it means to be a third world county. It has never really been about the standard of living for the average citizen though. More about whether a country is a bully or the bullied on the international stage, and we all know where the US falls on that spectrum.

What, do want a shitty graveyard shift call center job? Trust me, you aren’t losing out by not having access to that.

Unemployment isn’t even high right now. Why are you whining about a non-issue to begin with? What good would it do you to have more low paying jobs when the problem is that all the jobs are already low paying as it is? We just saw that if there are more jobs then people they’ll happily crash the economy until there aren’t just to make sure wages don’t go up. What do you hope to accomplish by spreading 30 year old conservative propaganda?

That hasn’t really been an issue for more than a decade at this point. Domestic manufacturing production in developed nations has actually been increasing. They just don’t use humans much. You’re not losing your job to poor people overseas. You’re losing it to robots, and you have been since before the current AI craze.

Hey, that’s a reasonable thing to hope. The flip side, of course, is that I’m hoping I don’t have to live through Star Trek’s idea of how the 21st century goes. They definitely got all of the details wrong, but I’m afraid the vibes are matching a little too well.

Fallout 4 kind of in a weird place where it’s simultaneously a bad Fallout game and arguably the best Bethesda game. How much you like it really just depends on which of those things you’re more into. I’ve personally never really gotten the appeal of Bethesda games. I usually end up spending 90% of my time going through my inventory analyzing the price to weight ratio of all the worthless junk I’ve accumulated, and the worlds have always just felt really shallow to me personally, but clearly I’m in the minority. I am sort of curious why more people seem to have agreed with me on Fallout 4 than on Skyrim though. I guess maybe it’s just that the people who talk about it the most are more likely to be Fallout fans than Bethesda fans.
