I like sci-fi and fantasy
I do like comedy anime when it’s mixed with slice of life but I’m not sure if that will If I will like movies like that
Everyone should see this film.
Throne of Blood (1957)
It’s Macbeth, but in feudal Japan. One of the best films I’ve ever seen. I’m constantly reminded of it while watching Shōgun.
I saw Godzilla Minus One recently and wow, that hit close to home. My mother grew up in post-war Japan and had the whole survivor guilt thing. Nearly tossed herself off a bridge.
I have seen Godzilla Minus one and that Is what got me into wanting to find more live action movies and tv shows from Japan

Read the plot and I don’t like that
The plot sounds depressing

I’ve already heard of both of them

Look, I deleted my comment because I now realise they are way closer to animated movies then anime but what’s with the negative response
I thought we left this kind of stuff behind on reddit
You could’ve repsonded with why you thought I was wrong instead of just responding with a negative comment
When someone makes a mistake you help them realise the mistake they made by making them aware of it and teaching them
If you just respond with a negative comment to anyone who makes a mistake there is no way that person can learn and grow

Dont twist this conversation like you wasnt being negative
It wasn’t my intention to be negative and I apologise of my comments appear negative to you but I never intended to be negative
You ask for recommendations and shit all over them when
I didn’t like the battle royal suggestion because I don’t like the plot because it feels depressing to me
I just don’t like movies with dystopian plots because they make me feel depressed
I watch movies to have fun, not be depressed
And again like I said I realise I made a mistake of calling studio ghibli’s animated films “anime-films”
Your response to that made me think it over again and realise its not like anime at all so I deleted that comment
I actually removed my reply explaining why, because I got fed up with taking to you. Get off your high horse.
This feels like your just aiming negativity at me and your entire comment if I where to quote it feels negative
I’m not being negative here as that is not my intention and I apologise if it feels that way to you but your response feels like you have the intention of being negative towards me
Calling Studio Ghibli just “anime movies” sounds so wrong…
Especially as you say you like fantasy, which Ghibli is famous for.
I’m just going to copy paste my comment reply to the other person as its applicable to you as well:

I don’t think I said anything mean or derogatory towards you, just that Ghibli being regard as “anime movies” is strange, and that you might be dismissing something being recommended before really knowing what it was about. Apologies for any offence, though.
I have already heard of both of them, I catched part of spirited away from a local run by my local TV channel and Princess monoke I have watched part of but haven’t finished
I am longing for more live action movies though since seeing godzilla minus one
At least you didn’t respond with negativity like that other person did and I thank you for that
Actually, Battle Royale is more like a dark comedy. The acting during violent and action scenes is way too wacky. People get shot and killed but overreact. One could argue that the movie is a satire because of its social commentary. Maybe the death scenes are wacky so that it is easily more palatable to address some of the more serious undertones about the relationship between adults and adolescents.
Battle Royale inspired Kill Bill Vol. 1. If you’ve seen one and not the other, it’s worth the view.
Also, Battle Royale is basically the Hunger Games, but earlier and grafted onto Japanese economic outlook.
I like sci-fi and fantasy films, too, but most of the Japanese ones that come to mind are very well known already, so I’ll include some other stuff as well:
Seven Samurai (1954)
The Castle of Cagliostro (1979)
Tampopo (1985)
Minbo (1992)
Shall We Dance? (1996)
After Life (1998)
Spirited Away (2001)
5 Centimeters per Second (2007)
Your Name is one of my most favourite films, it’s about bodyswapping.
Evangelion 1-4 are incredible sci-fi, but the TV series it’s based on is arguably superior (or at least, should really be watched first).
Shin Ultraman is very fun if you like campy live action sci-fi.
I like Red Lion. It isn’t either genre, but it is a feudal Japanese film that is filled with a surprising amount of comedy. Could be of interest to you if you can tolerate older movies. Shin Gojira and Gojira Minus One are also both good, but unfortunately don’t fit in the genres you suggested either.
Monster (2023). Went under the radar for mainstream audiences, but it’s an excellent film.
I highly recommend Perfect Days. Lovely little movie.
