I want to be optimistic but I remember Flick’s tenure also started the same way, wins and draws and a lot of media praise, until the new manager bounce stopped working and germany regressed back to playing badly. The defense is still so bad.
GGs Germany, fun and exciting match.
Mexico needs this level of competition every friendly cycle
That’s the biggest takeaway. Even if it isn’t top UEFA talent (logistics are difficult) we can totally schedule Colombia, Argentina, Brazil more often
Most enjoyable mexico game in a minute
Peak Concacaf match. See you next Gold Cup Germany 🫡
Maybe it was a tad better than those
Mexico had a plan and they stuck with it.
Play a low block, send Edson Álvarez like a rabid dog after anybody who holds the ball for too long, and play long balls to take advantage of being the faster team. For all the shit he gets from Mexico fans, Germany had no answer for Antuna’s runs. He popped up unmarked in space for 80 minutes straight.
It wasn’t perfect. Chucky didn’t see a few passes he should have found, Feyenoord Santi is still way better than selección Santi, and Romo looked lost.
But it feels good to see a Mexico team have a clear plan and execute it, even if the result is only a draw.
Romo has no place in the starting 11. Edson, Chavez and Sanchez is the way to go.
With Cordova, Cortizo, Marcel Ruiz and Fidel Amvriz behind them
Mexico was great this, definitely gave Germany their money’s worth. We need more tricky oppositions like this even if we occasionally get battered.
1.65cm Erick Sanchez scoring a header against Germany is hilarious, ngl.
Wait, so Andrich didn’t get to play? It’s a friendly, just give him his first cap, come on.
Germany is crazy talented. Happy mexico played a good game against them even though both teams are at a low point. Gg
So confident in Nagelsmann after this interview
I honestly think Johan and Montes were better today than Rudiger and Sule. Nailed on duo for sure.
For me, Antuna can’t pass or beat his man, but he can run onto a ball or draw a foul, if we play him we can’t expect him to create much. Santi is easily on a higher level than Martin, there’s no real reason to keep playing Martin instead of one of the best young players in Europe right now.
Our weakest position now is at left-back, and we keep taking three 9’s and four keepers for some reason I can’t understand.
Gallardo is fine, Jorgie was absolute garbage. Didn’t play in Ajax, doesn’t play in Porto, yet he’s starting for the national team. Televisa at work.
Nah Antuna can absolutely do damage, he jst needs to get better at decision making, specially in crosses
Good game
Anyone know how Vazquez and Montez did?
How is Santi so far?
I would rate him like a 6/10. Made some great plays but also messed up big time in others. But you have to consider Germany had 68% possession, it was hard to create clear chances for him + lozano being selfish sometimes and messing up a play didn’t help
Germany are playing better than during the late-stage Flick era. They have an improved structure and a better idea of how to move forward and create chances. Füllkrug provides a good focal point.
However, it’s not like their problems disappeared over night. Germany still have trouble fielding good fullbacks and their centerbacks are on the slower side. Moreover, there is still an imbalance on the holding midfielder position. Gündogan is a great passer and a creative player but he provides little defensive support for a shaky backline. If opponents can play through the German midfield and manage to have players run at the German defense with pace and determination then Germany are still in trouble. Pulisic showed that against them and Mexico exposed the Germans on several occasions today. Basically, if you manage to put pressure on the Germans they will crack.
