like if it was a players league. Obviously, the owners would be really pissed because players leave the NBA for LeBron‘s league, but I feel like he has enough money and power to accomplish something like that albeit perhaps in a bubble- like setting rather than in different cities around the continent

Why would players leave to join Lebron’s league? You leaving your $200M job because a friend starts up a brewery?

He wouldn’t do it, just like the Saudis aren’t gonna create an alternative NBA. They’re gonna look to gain power within the already established top basketball league. That’s smart money.

To paraphrase Chris Rock… LeBron is rich, but the guys paying LeBron are wealthy.

At this point? Nothing. If LeBron wanted to try and pull away he needed to try it when he was at least in the argument for best active player. The power in trying to split off (and getting others to fund it because you need outside money) is if the NBA’s status as the best players in the world is in question. Current LeBron is not good enough to do that.

This came up during the lockout season he was in Miami. It makes little sense and the best case scenario is he makes a quick buck while destroying a league that creates a bunch of new millionaires every year.

And in ten years what’s to stop the next best player from opening his own league? I think the best way forward is to buy NBA teams and then they can make the rules.

I would agree with that. My point was more back then he might have had the slimmest of chances of success but now there is 0% chance (instead of 0.001%)

He has nowhere near enough money for that. Maybe if he did like the XFL and had like 20k as the max. Why would even minimum NBA players take that?

Then you have to factor in costs of where games would be played and the costs of upkeep and staffing there.
