Hi, so my career has recently changed and I would benefit from a durable watch with a nice power reserve. I’ve looked a lot on my own but thought you folks might know more than I do. I’m specifically looking for a black dial that I can somewhat dress down, or in other words isn’t “tactical”.

What I’ve found that I like so far: Hamilton Khaki Murph 38mm Seiko TiCTAC SZSB006 Sinn BB56 Longines Spirit 37mm Black Dial

My wrist size is 6.5in and my budget is 1,000 USD. Thanks for any help you can give :)

Was going to suggest the IWC Pilot’s range but your budget brought everything back to your Hamilton - Seiko range. I don’t think even the Longines would be in the 1k vicinity.

The Hamilton Khaki would be my pick of your bunch. Leather, steel or nato strap would look great on that. Or you could check out the military series from Marathon. A lot of watch for the price. Hope that helps.

Thanks a lot I appreciate the input. I figured I’d be restricted to these picks here but atleast I know I have an educated selection haha

Educated selection indeed. At least you’ve done decent groundwork, not like some posts on here that require us all to be Prof X! Happy searching.

This is slightly over your $1000 budget including the metal bracelet (which you should definitely get because it’s great and helps to dress it back up when necessary) but still cheaper than the Longines Spirit 37mm.

Christopher Ward Sandhurst 2. One of my favorite everyday more casual watches.

That is absolutely gorgeous, I had a problem with Christopher Ward watches for a while because of their plain text “Christopher Ward” on the dial but that logo is much nicer on the eyes. Love it, thanks a lot.

I still don’t love their flag logo on a lot of their watches (but better than their previous logo), but for some reason it looks especially good on this watch, I guess because it matches the simple style of the printed numerals on a field watch.

Yeah something about this watch is definitely enamoring me lol, the case is so extremely sleek. Reminds me a bit of the Lorier Falcon. Shame I don’t like the textured dial on the falcon.

Or the acrylic crystal on the Lorier that scratches if you look at it. I know some people are fine with crystal scratches or dealing with polywatch to buff them out, but that’s a deal breaker for me.

Laco is worth checking out for that price range. Some nice microbrand offerings too, from the likes of Traska, Boldr, Smiths, etc.

Buy a $500 watch and a few bands. Get a nice linked bracelet, brown leather, black leather, and some nato bands.

I have the Murph 38 & it’s a great little watch. It dresses up and down nicely. Wore it in Europe recently & swapped between black shell cordovan and ash grey leather. The cathedral hands and faux patina colour gives it a lil somethin’ extra. Personally prefer it to the Baby Alpinist even though people are quick to recommend it over the Murph

I have a feeling I’ll end up going with the Murph. Currently dead stuck between the Murph and the CW Sandhurst 2.

Besides dial aesthetics, the most major point of difference is do you think you’d ever want to have the watch on a metal bracelet or not. I’m pretty sure the Murph doesn’t have that option, even though plenty of other Hamilton field watches do. But the Murph is meant to be more dressy than most field watches.

Maybe… the Serica 6190 field watch collection. The Denali in particular.
The power reserve could be better at only 42 hours, but it is a COSC certified movement.

The question isn’t how do you dress a field watch down, but up.

They’re very casual to begin with.

I‘d rather go with the Seiko Baby Alpinist and get a leather strap, a bracelet and a nato. All together for below 1000$. Similar specs like the murph. Dial is not plain black though.

Have a look as well at:

    • Traska Summiteer

    • Lorier Falcon 3

I’m actually a huge fan of that traska, thanks for the suggestion! I love the baby alpinist as well but I’ll admit I’m looking for a black-as-night kind of dial. Thanks!
