Yes, it’s preseason. But Wembanyama has shown to be not only an offense-altering defender in the paint but he’s even able to keep up with hyper-athletic wings like Wiggins from the perimeter and swat three-ball attempts from the likes of Klay

He’s already one of a kind

This dude is getting all kinds of hype on this sub and he’s never played a regular season game. Let’s just watch and see how teams match up and adjust.

I think if the Spurs had him sit in the paint and only worry about rim defense maybe, but they seem to have him on the perimeter a lot.

Because he was getting manhandled in the post by random 35-year-old Eastern Europeans who smoke a pack a day. A strong post player puts him on his hip and Wemby’s length won’t even come into play. He can be useful contesting shots like a free safety but I don’t see him having any success guarding NBA bigs until he gets way stronger.

    Can Wembanyama singlehandedly cure cancer?

He scored 15 points in a preseason game, so there’s no reason to believe he can! Also: he’s really tall!

This season? No. In his career? With health, absolutely. He’s a rookie and will have his ups and downs but more than that the Spurs team defense still has not been great in preseason and that’ll have to change for Spurs to be on an All-Defense team this season, realistically, unless he’s just beyond outlier individually good.

He’s gonna be able to recover from falling behind his defender with the long reaching blocks. But that doesn’t make him elite. He’s still gonna need to try very hard to stay in front of his guy. Not to mention the other center bullying him to the basket, which will probably make or break his case. So it’s possible, I’d say it’s likely if he proves he can stay ahead and stand his ground against the average 7 footer.

I’d pencil him in as defensive player of the year. He will average 4.7 blocks this year.

Also wouldn’t be surprised if he won Finals MVP this season.
