I really don’t understand when people say “buy a Rolex to impress others, buy a GS to impress yourself” as if all GS owners are galaxy brained appreciaters of the fine art of watch making and Rolex owners are Neanderthal hype monkeys. I’d expect most people who buy either brand and do so because they like the watch and appreciate its different aspects and value proposition and that’s it. Rolex does of course have it’s branding going for it but the “alternative” nature of a GS almost makes it trendy because it’s perceived as not being mainstream. to clarify I like both brands and their watches and will hopefully watches own one or both of them in future.

I think the reason that quote has any validity is because we in the watch community are in a huge bubble, and 99% of the population has no idea what a GS watch is. A shiny bracelet and Rolex logo will “impress” most people who are not into watches.

In the enthusiast community, I agree we can debate the merits of GS vs Rolex and appreciate both brands equally.
