Closing comments:

I removed a few troll votes (voting just 2s or 3s instead of 1s doesn’t make you harder to spot), which brings us down to 48 responses - about half as many as we had for the last match’s poll.

Since this came up in the comments after the last poll, just a quick clarification:

Q: What’s up with the number for defenders team performance, it’s not adding up if it’s supposed to be the medium.

A: They aren’t the average, the team performance of the defenders, midfielders, and forwards are all addressed by separate questions in the poll.

Initially, I considered calculating the average score of the ratings for defenders, midfielders, and forwards. But that quickly became too complex when players changed their positions, like when Laimer transitions from RB to CM after a sub, or when Kane spends a large portion of his playing time falling back into the midfield while Goretzka moves up to play as a #9.

I still wanted to keep those ratings in there, though, so I opted to create separate questions for each position.

Take those numbers with a grain of salt - they just serve as a “general impression” from the responders rather than a calculated value!

Got any ideas/suggestions on how to improve future polls? Let me know in the comments!

Yea, I really love comparing the numbers (and I’m surprised how Sofascore and FotMob rate some players differently).

Fun little detail: if you’re using a browser, you can sort the tables’ columns if you click on their headers (it’s a bit fiddly, you need to click just below the word, else you’ll end up clicking on the link to the website). So if you click right below “Sofascore” in the Starting XI table, it’ll sort that column by lowest to highest; click again for highest to lowest.

I’m not sure if that works for apps on your mobile, though.

I can remove the links to Sofascore and FotMob from the table headers if people would like to sort the columns without opening the links by mistake.

Would love to see the average of the three ratings for the players added to the post but if it’s too much hassle then that’s fine.

    For this match:

    Ulreich: 7.06 Minjae: 7.50 De Ligt: 7.10 Davies: 7.13 Laimer: 6.23 Kimmich: 7.90 Goretzka: 7.80 Sané: 7.70 Coman: 7.4 Musiala: 7.3 Kane: 7.5

    Tel: 6.30 Sarr: 6.36 Choupo: 6.1

      Done!

I had been toying with that idea as well. Originally I was interested in the deviation of our score vs. that of an external source (Sofascore), which would look like this:

      Player | r/fcbayern | Sofascore | Deviation | ---------|:----------:|:----------:|:----------:|:----------: Sven Ulreich| 7.9 | 6.7 | +1.2 | Minjae Kim| 8.1 | 7.1 | +1.0 |

But then I couldn’t decide which was better, Sofascore or FotMob - and when I noticed how they scored some players quite differently (up to +/-0.8), I thought that was pretty interesting, so I just kept both in there.

Of course, I could just take their average and calculate the deviation:

Player r/fcbayern Sofascore FotMob Average Sofascore/FotMob Deviation
      Sven Ulreich 7.9 6.7 6.6 6.7 +1.2
      Minjae Kim 8.1 7.1 7.3 7.2 +0.9

But when it comes to spreadsheets, I tend to pile up information until it’s “too much”, so I wanted to keep it simple.

Adding the overall average, as you suggested, is no problem:

      Player r/fcbayern Sofascore FotMob Average
      Sven Ulreich 7.9 6.7 6.6 7.1
      Minjae Kim 8.1 7.1 7.3 7.5

I guess at the end of the day, it just comes down to what type of information we’re most interested in seeing.

Personally i think showing the deviation between reddits ratings and sofascores or sofascore and fotmobs average is good. It shows what players we are too harsh on and who we cut too much slack. I appreciate the great work as always.

I agree that the deviation would give us more to talk about and it would be nice to see those numbers at a glance, rather than having to do the math in your head.

I love the comparisons between our scorings and Fotmob/Sofascore, it clearly shows how we are harsher towards some players and we see the quality more clearly if a player is more flashy. Thank you

It works both ways as we as fans know the context behind performances and have a better grasp on what players are trying to do and if they are succeeding/failing at this on the pitch.

        I checked, out of curiosity:

        #Joshua Kimmich

        Opponent| r/fcbayern | Sofascore | FotMob | Average S/F | Deviation ---------|:----------:|:----------:|:----------:|:----------:|:----------:|:----------: FC København | 5.7 | 7.7 | 7.5 | 7.6 | -1.9 SC Freiburg | 7.6 | 8.0 | 8.1 | 8.1 | -0.5 Mainz 05 | 7.4 | 8.2 | 8.1 | 8.2 | -0.8

Our rating for his performance in the Copenhagen match is wild…

I don’t know man, i think we saw a different game. In my opinion, Sane carried the team

Sofascore and FotMob seem to think that our midfield (Kimmich and Goretzka) carried the team, with Sané coming in third place.

I know I’ve said this before but man this is really good and very informative. The comparisons are great as well.

    Great work!

I couldn’t take part this week as I wasn’t able to watch the match. But can I just say how much I like these and I really value the defence/midfield/attack ratings as sometimes the system can work better or worse than the sun of its part. This is a valuable judgement tool.

      Thanks!

At one point, I was even debating with myself whether I should just remove those ratings because they seemed a bit “vague,” but you brought up an excellent point: sometimes the whole is greater (or lesser) than the sum of its parts, and I believe those scores reflect that perfectly.
