Relatively new to watches, but I’ve really become addicted to the culture. Almost every aspect of it intrigues me. The current SOTC is only 2 Tags, an Omega AT, and a Seiko. But I’m very curious if my own preferences are unusual, since there are a number of things I really don’t like in a watch. Based on what I’m seeing online (here and other online forums), my preferences seem to be pretty plain, which is fine. Just curious if there are others like me out there. Note, I’m not bashing anything here. Just not my particular taste. Here is my list:
· No bezels
· No gold
· No NATO bands
· No chronograph
· No complications (I can live with a date)
· No numerals for hour markers(neither Arabic nor Roman)
· No skeletons
· No bright colors
· No digital
· No quartz
· No Tanks
I’m not lacking for watches to pine over, but there are definitely a large number of what seem to be very popular watch types that really don’t appeal to me, again which is fine. Thanks
To me it looks as if you like more minimalist watches, which is totally fine. The newer GS without a power reserve indicator or the quartz GS might fit you, also look into Nomos.
Thanks, Yes, the GS White Birch Highbeat is on my shortlist. I’ve looked at the Nomos, but doesn’t really appeal to me. I think the super small lugs just don’t really appeal to me visually. But otherwise it looks like a very nice watch.
Small lugs from Nomos? Are we talking about the same brand?
You know what you like, that’s more than a lot of people here can say based off all the “which should I buy” posts featuring multiple completely different watch styles.
I was a bit like you in the first couple of years of collecting. And then one day you look at your collection and realise they all look the same (or better still, your wife will point out that they’re all the same , and up until then you have dismissed her opinion as ignorance but then realize that she’s right).
I used to not like gold. Now I like gold.
I couldn’t stand diver watches. Now I have four.
I thought 38 mm was my sweet spot and all my watches should be that. Now I enjoy watches across a range of different sizes.
It’s fine to come up with your own rules but don’t be surprised if you break them down the track.
p until then you have dismissed her opinion
Yeah, I definitely hear what you are saying, and I agree, over time I’m sure my tastes will change.
Knowing what you like is a great place to be, just look at some of the posts on watch threads and one wonders what on earth people are thinking asking, this or that, what ‘should’ I add next and so on. Simple elegance is a great way to go. Hope you enjoy finding the time pieces you really enjoy in good health for many decades to come.

I wouldnt exactly call that “only”. I am at a pretty similar level but with some added heirlooms for a bit more variety. So far i am actually just wearing my more vanilla modern watches.
I am now at the point where i want tp add something more exotic now. Like complications or weird materials. So i think this is pretty common. First you want to have your bases covered. And once that is in place you can think about more niche things.
I think i am heading for a bronze watch, such as the oris big crown in red with a bronze bracelet. That seems like a good middle ground of a still fairly conventional layout but with a weird material and inocuousbut special complication.
But if you wanna stick to the normal stuff, there is also nothing wrong with that, as you already said.
I wouldn’t say having preferences is unusual, but it Is unusually strict that you’ve ruled off watches with bezels, chronographs or any complication aside from a date.
