I use social media automation tools to schedule posts ahead of time several times a day. They suspended me out of the blue for “spam”. I am using their API for this. Literally no “big tech” platforms have done this to me - not LinkedIn, X, etc. I am just shocked that Mastodon who claims to be the anti establishment is the only one that has “silenced” me.

For someone working on their personal brand and following, are there even benefits of sticking around Mastodon? From my limited knowledge of it, it seems that if I cannot be on the primary server, then there isn’t much of a point for me being on Mastodon. Am I wrong on this assessment?

Ok so mastodon isn’t a centralized app so you got banned on a specific server go cry there.

I use social media automation tools to schedule posts ahead of time several times a day.

What were these posts in regards to? were they sales pitches with links? Were they obvious commercial interests?

They suspended me out of the blue for “spam”

Who are “they”? Which instance banned you?

Smaller communities usually gather together around common themes.

if I cannot be on the primary server, then there isn’t much of a point for me being on Mastodon

People who came for the social aspect of social media seem to enjoy smaller servers.

People who want clout, want to advertise something, want to advocate for a position, or became addicted to the “favorite” / “boost” serotonin drips will probably be happier on one of the larger servers.

Perhaps you’re right when you say there isn’t much point for you being on Mastodon.

Just because an API exists which allows you to post does not necessarily mean that the things you are posting are allowed on whatever instance you’re using.

I have no idea what kind of stuff you’re trying to post so I can’t speak to whether it was reasonable for them to suspend you, but I think most mastodon users would not agree that mastodon.social is the only instance worth being on

No external links. No promotions. Just hashtags and statistics around digital marketing, ecommerce and web dev scheduled about 4 hours in between posts.

Which sounds like spam to me. Was your account flagged officially as a bot? Then you might get away with it. Otherwise I would say it fills the definition of suspicious behavior / spam and definitely the content most people on say Twitter would block your account for.

Your use of the term “personal brand” reeks of spam. One thing that could get you banned is overuse of hashtags, particularly if they are only peripherally related. People subscribe to hash tags and don’t want to see unrelated stuff.

Personal brand just means it’s your name instead of a username with your headshot instead of an avatar. There’s no links, no promotions, no pitches. Just hashtags and statistics around marketing, ecommerce, etc.

This is why I’m burned out on Mastodon. Too many instances just have contradictory & arbitrary moderation, breaking the entire system into isolated islands of owners pointing at each other and screeching. It’s not a community, it’s Lord of the Flies.

Just because you used some instance’s tools doesn’t mean you weren’t spamming with them. “Someone working on their personal brand” sounds spammy.
