Despite this being the “official” nix community on the Fediverse, it seems quite inactive. Others like !nix@programming.dev and !nixos@infosec.pub are only slightly better.

I’m wondering if the admins would be okay with me configuring my fediverser instance to mirror reddit posts and comments here?

To me it is another data point corroborating two things:

      • The large majority of “reddit protestors” really have a short attention span, and were not really interested in putting a fight against Reddit. As soon as the subs started opening again, it became a display of virtue to say “Fuck /u/spez”, but they all happily went back to the status quo.
      • Reddit is taking a look at this and thinking “we won”, which will embolden them to be more aggressive towards their plans. Mirroring content now is our best shot at creating a hedge against a future Reddit that will not hesitate to take more user-hostile actions if they think can increase their revenue.

Yeah, but I think I’d still like to have an alternative that is part of the Fediverse. I know that the Discourse devs are working on it, but I am not aware of any actual working deployment.

Disclaimer: I know nothing about Nix communities and I have no opinion about whether you should do it.

The Reddit mirror bot was created by @SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml, feel free to contact him for assistance.

I’m actually okay with the mirror capability of fediverser, after all I’m the one that is developing it. :)

It’s a bit more sophisticated than a simple mirror. It creates a 1:1 mapping between reddit accounts on the alien.top instance, which can then be taken over by the reddit users .by login via the portal.

But therein lies the dilemma: I know that this tool is helping to bootstrap communities, but I also understand that some admins are against it. I have it already set up my system at alien.top to collect the posts from /r/NixOS, but I’m not going to push them to any community unless I get explicit approval from the mods and admins.

        That is so clever

If you’d like to deploy an instance of your own, let me know. It would be nice to have more servers running it before reddit decides to strike me out.
