Sorry, I am sure this does not really belong here, but I was not sure where it belonged and I figured y’all would have the answer anyway.
So yeah, If I have a POE switch, is there an adapter I can use to charge a cell phone from that POE port?
Depends. POE is certainly trending towards powering your whole house. We’re not quite there yet but outlets for cell phone charging are well within the current power limitations. Shouldn’t be an issue to get an outlet adapter. Especially if you already have POE power to your lights/shades/whatever else.
So yeah you should be able to.
AFAIK there are Ethernet to Lightning/Micro USB/USB C adapters and if there were I’d never ever use them. POE is meant for networking and Ethernet stuff not charging your cellphone.
Eh, PoE is meant to power devices. It doesn’t care much whether that’s a phone, a camera, or whatever. Worst case it’ll just be slow depending on what flavor of PoE we’re talking about.
;-). I asking if I could, not if I should…. :-). I plugged a usb-c ethernet adapter into the back of a Logitech light, and into the poe switch. And I got no light.
I really just want to make it work for fun.
There’s an entire industry of commercial building architects and design teams that are installing PoE-powered lighting and other non-network devices everywhere. It’s not 2003 any more.
There’s a ton on amazon https://www.amazon.com/UCTRONICS-Splitter-Gigabit-Raspberry-Ethernet/dp/B07V35DH5F/
I haven’t used them though and unless you’re a long way from an outlet, I’d just power it from the closest outlet.
Thats the schizznizzle. Thanks, I was just missing the correct search terms.
No prob- we use similar adapters(not usb -c though) for our camera systems at work that’s why I knew they existed.
I use these types of adapters to power pi’s, hue boxes, lutron controllers and even dmx controllers.
I know Ubiquiti sells also. It’s 5V 2A output though
