From the article - ESPN re: video: “We occasionally look to connect sports moments of the past with contemporary imagery and storylines as part of our social content. While it was never our intention to misrepresent anything for fans, we completely recognize how this instance caused confusion.”
Lol
It wasn’t a misrepresentation, it was a complete fabrication
but honestly it just seems like they were trying to make a meme. Like two years ago when Tatum hit a game-winning bank shot, I used deep fake lip sync to have him lip sync to Paul Pierce hitting a game-winning bank shot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G8TqVFkEi7g
To those who know the Pierce clip, it was an obvious meme. Maybe they assumed people were already super familiar with that original Dame clip??
Their explanation would make sense if it was an edit of an iconic moment of his, like the buzzer beater over PG or something, but who the fuck thinks anyone would recognize some random ass interview clip from three years ago??
Wait are you being sarcastic? Cause it is famous, J Cole included it in a song
he’s had the jersey for two games and yall caping already lmao
Sorry you misunderstood us.
There needs to be more oversight with this shit. If I was the NBA I would be upset that ESPN is pulling shit like this and then gaslighting people that they weren’t wrong for doing so, they’re just sorry it confused you.
So in other words, none of us should ever trust anything ESPN puts out there ever again. Because it might be some sort of deep fake rereleased interview that completely puts everything out of context.
Alright cool, thanks for letting me know. Will renew my subscription to The Athletic for my legitimate sports news.
I don’t get why this is a big deal
This is the beginning holy shit
Even more solidifying proof that ESPN is garbage and trash. Enough with this irresponsible behavior
I’m utterly baffled by what the goal of this fake was. How easy would it have been to just take the original footage and say something like “Damian Lillard has always been a fierce competitor, here’s him in Portland talking about how he’s there to win, that determination has followed him to Milwaukee where he debuted with 39/8.”
Maybe they couldn’t get an interview with Lillard after the game but they still wanted to feel important and part of the moment, so they faked an interview from the past that seemed to say something relevant and inserted themselves so people will associate exciting NBA moments with ESPN? It doesn’t make any sense otherwise, it barely makes sense with my speculation. I would really love to hear the reasoning behind faking the clip from the actual person in charge. What kind of dumb fuckery were they trying to accomplish?
If you thought they were trying to make this look real ur dumb
ESPN sucks and is owned by a shitty so this is not surprising at all
Like did ESPN do this to make it sound like he wasn’t super into going to the Bucks for narrative?

I thought it was pretty obvious where this video was from. they were interviewing him with a stick lol
Shitty AI memes are already doing enough damage to NBA Twitter, we don’t need shitty AI reporting to compound it
This is a very famous meme on the internet and if u didn’t recognize it for what it is then u probably old…
A lot of yall don’t watch basketball…that was only misleading if u started following the NBA this season
