Pretty much the title. I’ve seen plenty of people using proxmox and truenas but I don’t really see many homelab users running Ubuntu server or something similar? Do many people actually use it to run docker or any containers on their machines? Just curious.
I run Debian on bare metal as my docker host.
Rocky Linux on bare metal to run mostly docker containers for me.
That’s what I’d do. I don’t have a home server yet but my game server is an Ubuntu server running the game in Podman (instead of Docker).
I don’t physically home lab (tiny apartment with a partner who doesn’t like fan noise) - but my virtual home lab (AWS) is all Ubuntu server. It’s been my flavour of choice for almost 20 years.

Must admit, my initial thoughts on ubuntu server that snaps would make it very easy to install certain services proved to be true, sudo snap install nextcloud, and bang, nextcloud is installed.
I guess its no good though if you dont like snaps, for something like next cloud though i wouldnt be bothered if its installed from a snap
I use ubuntu server for vms in proxmox and ubuntu for my lxc containers
All my VMs run Ubuntu server and the actual metal server itself runs Ubuntu.
Debian > Ubuntu
Probably there is some people here running VMs with Ubuntu Server in their Proxmox machines.
Debian all the way here.
I’ve run both, and I prefer Ubuntu. One massive plus being that it has better out-of-the-box support for drivers.
My server hardware doesn’t change often. Not a huge plus.
I was on the Ubuntu wagon before Debian. Many reasons I switched but the final straw was the bloat that kept being added to Ubuntu. Not huge but Debian uses less resources and seems to be more stable, in my experience.
I’d still use Ubuntu in some settings. Just not my lab VMs.
Loads of us run Ubuntu VMs on Proxmox.
Me too, on proxmox.
This is the way
There’s dozens of us! Dozens!
Well, that makes four of us. 😆
What? That’s five of us.
-1. Debian user.
I run them on ESXi but same type of thing
This is the answer
I want to run an IRC chat and a virtual assistant so I’ll probably run those in an Ubuntu server VM
I’m not sure if I quali as a homelabber, but Ubuntu server is definitely runnning my Nextcloud as a snap package. Once I move it to proxmox it’ll still run as an os on vm, just to run the Nextcloud.
Crap ton of them as VMs, but bare metal? One workstation and one serve station.
I used to use Ubuntu VMs on Proxmox host but I’ve switched to Debian a year or so ago.
Ubuntu server on ESXi VMs
Xubuntu on laptop
