Genuine question as he’s pretty much only playing garbage time through 4 games. Seems kind of weird for a young team to not play their 6th overall pick

I never understood the pick even on draft night as he seemed like a poor fit with the roster given his lack of shooting but can Magic fans explain?

Nine days later, and this hasn’t aged well. It appears they are taking it slow with Black, making him earn the minutes, and he’s delivering. He has been one of the most efficient players in the league on offense and among the better defenders. His advanced stats also reveal that he is playing at above league-average efficiency with an 18 PER. At just 20 years old, he’s really impressive, and Magic fans should thank their lucky stars for landing another exceptionally talented young player.

The Magic have too many guards

    Way too many guards

And they still drafted him and another guard in Jett Howard

Can’t complain about the latter since they gave us Dick

I guess with their height and body size, potentially Black and Howard don’t have to be guards forever?

Not really sure who would have been otherwise, but neither really felt like inspiring, game-changing picks for that roster.

Jarace Walker and Bill Coulibaly were right there if they needed a !not guard to develop

We should trade all of our future assets. I’m thinking 3 injury prone players all on the other side of their prime

The real question is why take him with the 6th pick when the roster is so guard heavy

Yeah, I don’t understand why people are asking this question. If you think Black is going to be the best guy, then it’s ridiculous to pass on him because you already have guys like Fultz, Suggs, and Anthony on the roster.

Picking a guy who is an absolutely abysmal fit on a team doesn’t mean he’s automatically the best player available, therefore making it a good pick.

But even in a world where Anthony Black was the best player, is there any way he would look good in lineups without any shooting whatsoever and with every other player on the court wanting on-ball reps? Their reluctance to factor in fit whatsoever is creating an environment that compromises player’s developments.

So why is Scoot getting so many minutes then? I guess shooting 5% from 3 with more turnovers than assists is what earns you playing time in Portland

the only way for scoot to get better and get used to NBA games is for him to play. the talent is there.

If the team loses 60 games, so be it

Scoot Henderson is currently a starter over Malcolm Brogdon, and will most likely be the reason Sharpe goes back to the bench once Simons returns

Malcolm Brogdon is on the bench for durability issue.

If he started, he’d 100% get hurt sooner or later

4 of the top 11 aren’t playing yet. It’s early in the season, teams are still working out their rotations and injuries haven’t hit yet. He will get his shot

All of Orlando’s guards are small. Big PGs are in vogue and putting a 6”4 guy vs someone like Cade Cunningham is a terrible decision for a team trying to build a winner. They can’t afford to waste their #1 pick in Paolo by not getting their backcourt right and while they probably like what they have currently they desperately need more size.

Black is still a rookie for a team that has plenty of guards.

Also, from what I can tell, the Magic wanted Ausar Thompson since he could play next to any guard and Wagner+Banchero while having potential as a 30% 3 pt guy.

They didn’t need Walker, Bilal, Whitmore, or Hendricks due to having Wagner and Banchero.

Black was the closest thing they had after Ausar was drafted #5.

Imo, they should’ve tried trading that pick away.

Why would anything be up with him? He doesn’t control the limited minutes he’s being given, the coach does.

Unless they viewed him as someone who can (because of his size) play as a wing as well as a point guard, I’m not really sure why they drafted him.

The league has too much talent at this point. An expansion is desperately needed. Lottery picks used to be a shoe-in to get major rotation minutes.
