    The subtext to “don’t be vassals” is a hearty “fuck off”. And that’s basically all he meant to say, I suspect. And tbh, I am starting to question whether his advice of forging a European path is actually good, given who it’s coming from. Otoh, there is an angle from which European armament could be profitable to him, and that is US arms sales.
