With QBs that have retired in the last 5 years, there are some interesting HOF debates that I see coming up. Right now the sure-fire HOF guys are Brady, Brees, and Rodgers when he retires. The next tier, however, is a lot more interesting. You have Matt Ryan, Big Ben, and Rivers who are all very close. What’s interesting is that according to Pro Football Reference’s HOF Monitor, they all have fairly similar scores even though they have different resumes. Ryan has the MVP/All-Pro 1 season which is pretty much required unless you have 2 Super Bowls. Ben doesn’t have a crazy MVP season, but he does have those 2 Super Bowls and 17 good years. Then Rivers has some crazy counting stats. I think that Ryan and Roethlisberger have a slight edge over Rivers but it is very hard to separate the 3. So my question is do we think any of them make it? If they do it opens up the debate for a lot of players in the future. Also, how do we think the HOF committee weighs Rings/MVPS/All-Pro teams? The media is always so focused on the rings but looking at the resumes of HOF QBs there are a lot more without rings than there are without All-Pro seasons.

Edit: Here is the PFR Monitor. The average HOF QB has a score of 108. Ryan has a score of 106, Ben has a score of 100, and Rivers is at 98.

“Big Ben” eventual gets in. May not be first ballot but the guy was associated with winning and has 2 rings to his name.

Rivers has similar numbers but never making a SB appearance will likely be held against him (fair or not).

I think Ryan is a maybe, but not likely even with his MVP and SB appearance. Like Rivers, he’s in the Hall of Very Good.

I think Matt Stafford is a more interesting case than Ryan and Rivers. If he can string a few more healthy/winning seasons together I say he’s in. The ring gave a big boost to his resume.

Russ is another interesting case where had he not gone to Denver, he likely gets in. Denver has done nothing but hurt his legacy and even with his ring and second SB appearance, it’ll be interesting to see how voters treat his career.

Not that the committee weighs PFR HOF score, but there’s an argument to be made about whether a potential candidate should be better than the average HOF player.

It’s going to be very interesting to see how they view some of these volume dudes. I think all the 04 1st rounders get in except for jp losman. I also think Matty ice gets in.

It’s all weird though because Donovan McNabb won’t get in.

Cumulative stats in an era of increasing stat accumulation should not be a factor, unless you have Marino or Brady type excess. Rivers and Ryan are both very good, but never great QBs and aren’t worthy of HoF IMO.

Putting Ben with the likes of a dude who never won a Super Bowl is kind of…shit almost insulting.

Dude went to 3 and won 2 Super Bowls.

I think he’d be the only multi Super Bowl winning qb to NOT make it if he didn’t?

Would prefer Ben not getting in. Those super bowls were terrible performances.

That’s a guy elevated by the talent around him, not elevating the talent himself.

    HOVG in my opinion.

Ben’s going in 2nd or 3rd Ballot. He won’t go first cause he’s an ass. Eli is not quite a lock but is most likely getting in. If Phil makes it in the Hall is a fucking joke and it’s discredited. Phil did nothing big his entire career, no wins, trophies or iconic moments.

Ryan and Rivers not winning a chip will keep them out even if i think both have a good case for sneaking in

Ben makes it eventually, Eli is similar to Ben and probably makes it because of the storylines, Ryan doesn’t get in (but he would for sure if they won the super bowl, just unlucky for him), rivers doesn’t get in either.

I may seemed biased, but if Rivers is in the conversation based on stats alone, then we have to include Romo in the conversation.

IMO, neither did enough to get in. Ben for sure, Matt is a toss up. But I’d lean towards no.

The HOF doesn’t mean shit anymore. Literally everyone gets in, even if they were just mediocre.

Can you tell the story of the NFL without bringing up X player?

You can’t without talking about Manning, Brady, Brees, Rodgers, Big Ben, etc

You can without talking about Rivers, Ryan, etc

    That’s the line.

Roethlisberger has the 2 Superbowl wins, plus a 3rd appearance that would have been a 3rd win if not for Fumbly McSlickFingers

He has the Volume stats overall, most wins as a rookie, lead the lead in passing twice, and iirc, the most 500+ yard games in history

They all should get in. The quarterbacks surrounding them are all HOF. Also with some quarterbacks that don’t belong, but are in, such as Namath or Kelly, only heighten the reason for why those 3 should be in.
