Only at the end, they were like brothers before Ani went to the dark side.
Not really. Only time they were implied to be friends is at the start of the Ep2, when they talk about how they saved each other on some off-screen adventure. From there on what actually see is more like a disgruntled teacher-student relationship that keeps deteriorating.
I think people forget how much heavy lifting the Clone Wars series did for their relationship, and Anakin’s character in general. Canonically they really were like brothers, but this is not portrayed clearly in film.
Their last interaction before Anakin’s fall:
ANAKIN: Master, I’ve disappointed you. I have not been very appreciative of your training . . . I have been arrogant and I apologize . . . I’ve just been so frustrated with the Council. Your friendship means everything to me.
OBI-WAN: You are strong and wise, Anakin, and I am very proud of you. I have trained you since you were a small boy. I have taught you everything I know. And you have become a far greater Jedi than I could ever hope to be, and you have saved my life more times than I can remember. But be patient, Anakin. It won’t be long before the Council makes you a Jedi Master.
OBI-WAN starts down the ramp, then turns back.
OBI-WAN: (continuing) Don’t worry. I have enough clones with me to take three systems the size of Utapau. I think I’ll be able to handle the situation . . . even without your help.
ANAKIN: Well, there’s always a first time.
OBI-WAN laughs.
They talk for a few more minutes before ANAKIN watches OBI-WAN depart.
ANAKIN: Obi-Wan, may the Force be with you.
OBI-WAN: Good-bye, old friend. May the Force be with you.
Right, we have this very cringy dialog explaining to us that they are indeed friends because the movies never showed us and we need to be reminded of it to make the final battle more emotional.
Typical examle of show, don’t tell.
Anakin was shown defying the Council’s orders to go save Obi-Wan in AOTC. Then in ROTS he pushes back on Palpatine to again save Obi-Wan when the ship is going down.
I’m curious what kind of actions you would have shown or why that dialogue is cringey?
George Lucas isn’t good with dialogue, and the prequels definitely suffer from some subpar dialogue (any of the dialogue between Anakin and Padme for example).
It’s also perfectly clear Anakin and Obi-Wan had a close relationship, look how devastated Obi-Wan is when Anakin turns to the dark side.
Their relationship is even referenced in the original trilogy as being close. Not sure where the other poster is getting his ideas from.
I agree that a lot of the dialogue is bad. I don’t think this is a good example though. Quite the opposite, it’s a great scene. Anakin apologizes sincerely, effectively conveys his emotions and why he’s feeling the way he is, then both men tell each other how much they value their friendship. It’s some great emotional maturity and honesty.
I think we could use more dialogue like this in movies and the real world, maybe we don’t have enough of it and that’s why it comes off as “cringey” to some.
That can also be explained by loyalty towards a fellow soldier and master. But the movie characters just don’t feel like friends on-screen. They have no chemistry. And they complain about behind each other’s backs a lot.
I’m not a writer or can provide an easy fix, but everytime I see Obi-Wan say “And he was good friend” in New Hope, I always think back at the prequels and think … “really?”.
I mean, I’ve had falling outs with people that I once conidered friends … and they didn’t even mass murder a bunch of kids.
That’s really where the core problem is, I think. Anakin doesn’t really have much of an ark. He was always kind of frustrated and angry and basically had one foot in the door to the darkside from the start of ep2. Obi-Wan seems emotionally tone deaf for not realising sooner Anakin was a bad apple … even though council literally told him they sense “grave danger” in him. But I guess he promised.
