Pretty interesting fact I found out. I wonder if the NBA will roll back their limitations on High School drafts again.

He graduated high school, and then did a postgraduate year at IMG Academy. So while he was drafted “out of high school” he met the requirement of being 1 year removed from completing high school prior to entering the draft. LeBron would still be the only player drafted “immediately” out of high school.

Remember when Nelly had the line about taking her straight out of high school and into the pros?

I thought at the time it was a clever nod to the NBA. Now it feels super creepy.

Frankly it tends to not work out the successes are Moses Malone, KG, Kobe, LeBron, and Dwight. Correct me if I’m wrong but other than those players high school players have all underperformed or washed out abnormally fast.

TLDR: “From the players’ union perspective, lowering the draft eligibility age to 18 would bring more young players in to develop in the league and take away roster spots from veterans (and the union is made up of those veterans, not undrafted players). The union has suggested ways to keep veterans on the roster (possibly a roster expansion) as mentors, but a deal could not be reached. As for the teams, plenty of GMs would prefer an extra year to evaluate players, especially with them going up against better competition in college/G-League/Overtime Elite/overseas.”

I think the Ignite kind of kills hope of high schoolers being drafted for now.

I mean we have two dudes on our team that both came out of high school lol (3 if you want to count scoot, but I don’t).

But yeah Lebron was 18 when he played his first nba game and that is just crazy

Dude is still averaging 25+ ppg on high efficiency. He could probably play until 45 at this rate

Remember when the nba was gonna go back to allowing HS players and there was gonna be the “double draft”? What happened? It was being hyped beyond just speculation. Even Zach Lowe was talking like it was a sure thing.

Once NIL deals in college became a thing, it wasn’t viewed as being as big of a problem that needed to be fixed. Maybe the rule change will still happen eventually, but that took away a lot of the urgency.

Nikola Jovic was still in high school while playing his first NBA season.

European players due to the influence of football culture aren’t really treated the same in regards to this, Luka was taken out of school and shipped off to another country to play professional basketball at 15 lol you’d get child neglect charges here in the states if you did this

Simons did an additional year after graduating, that’s why he was older. He spent a postgraduate year at IMG Academy.
