I was recently looking at watches and saw Glycine watches. I’ve never heard of them (not really familiar with watch brands) and was wondering what people’s opinions are and what models are best.
I have an airman no. 1, and it’s a great watch. Swiss movement, well made, no complaints.
Make sure to look for discounted pricing. The list prices for many of their watches are way over-inflated, and it’s possible to get the watches brand new at a steep discount if you look.
I have a 36mm gilt dial.
I got it for the Bond vibes and I love it.
I think it is very, very good value for money compared to other watches in the price category. The movement has been holding to tighter specs that issued for the year or so that ive had it. One of my more accurate watches. It’ll hold zero over the week if I take it off for sleeping most nights.
The dial gives surprisingly precise readings given the 36 size I have. Works great under water but the seconds hand is a little blurry. I’m sure the 39, and 42 sizes would have better under water visibility on the seconds hand. But its a great skin diver.
With 18mm lug width, it is a strap monster. I tend to rock sailcloth and parachutes more than the OEM bracelet. But the bracelet is perfectly serviceable, but the 36 does use a butterfly with no half links or micro adjust. The only counter to that is, being a 36 and lighter, if it wears a little loose, I don’t mind because of the size and style. I use the textiles for tight fits. Also, it takes in a whole new character with a $10 straight link jubilee style from amazon.
The lume isn’t going to give you sun burn, but its is very much no slouch. Its enough to get me to the minute around the apartment and a champ in the tent went camping. Under starlight, you can just read the dial as normal with the finishing of the hands and indices. It’s usually his under my sleeve due to size and I can always make out the time with relative ease, so I’m not “cheating” by giving it a flash light charge.
Good watches, but their name and logo seem out of Ali Express.
Glycine was founded in 1914.
What does that have to do with their brand and logo looking like they belong on an ali express watch?
Just got a Combat 6 Vintage yesterday. My first Glycine. Very impressed with the quality and comfort. Quality is on par with my Hamilton field auto. Held side by side, I’d say the Hamilton is a little better, but it could be my bias.
No brainer for the $250 I paid for it from Jomashop. If someone else had it and told me it was a $700 watch, I’d believe them. I’m seriously considering the Combat Sub as my next watch. I don’t have and always wanted a Submariner style diver.
I saw that, but I was wondering if jomashop is legit?
People have had their problems with them. It’s the only thing I’ve bought from them and didn’t have a single issue. And my warranty card is stamped. I’m not sure if Jomashop has another name they go by and are an authorized Glycine dealer or if the authorized dealer they bought it from stamped the card. I’ll figure that stuff out if/when I need warranty service.
Ashford is an authorized Glycine dealer. Their prices are a little higher, but they’ve got a far better Glycine selection. I haven’t bought from them either, but I haven’t heard anything bad about them. I haven’t really heard much about them, so take it as you will.
If Ashford had the one I bought and was around the same price, I’d have bought from them. But I didn’t have any issues with Jomashop, so I’d do business with them again. It helps that they an I are in NYS, as there’s no chance of international shipping issues, it’ll get here in a few days at most, etc.
Jomashop allegedly sells nothing but authentic stuff. I’ve never heard anyone complain about that. The complaints I’ve heard are all customer service issues. Shipper damaged/lost something and they quickly wash their hands of it, bad warranty work or denying warranty work (they carry their own warranty); stuff like that.
Glycine is my new go to recommendation for “first nice Swiss watch”. The bang-for-the-buck you get with them is incredible. It’s a great choice.
Their Combat Sub series is excellent if you like the diver look. The Airman is also nice… honestly, they’re all really great; you can’t lose.
I have the combat sub & i’m currently wearing the glycine vintage combat 36mm. Both great watches. They keep impeccable time for the money. I found them on eBay for less than list price.
