XM4s sound surprisingly good, particularly if you’re using them as your portable quiet room in the middle of a noisy environment. They have outstanding ANC.
But there are tradeoffs to everything, including ANC. I’ve owned the XM3s, XM4s, the WH-1000MX4s and the WH-1000XM5s. For the typical use case, they’re quite enjoyable - for awhile. Listen to them long enough and you may realize how congested they are. The elevated bass doesn’t help. For many listeners, that thumpy bass is the selling point. If you’ve discovered you can’t live with it, that’s a sign you have discriminating tastes.
