    Player: Ref, handball!

    Zlatan: Nope.

Player: How could you not see it?

Zlatan: I am the best. I do not miss anything. No handball.

Player: Is it cos your nose is in the way?

    Zlatan: Red card. Off.

They obviously wouldn’t officiate games for the clubs they played for, or their rivals. Current referees are already subject to restrictions like this, everyone has a favourite club that they’re going to be biased towards.

That feels like a Hail Mary move for Webb, and if really doesn’t sound like one which is going to work.

Inexperienced referees with a potential unconscious bias is going to make things worse, not better. Not to mention it undermines the confidence of the current referees even further.

Any young people aspiring to be referees are going to be demotivated as well.

Any other profession and Webb is out of a job now.

True. Imagine a referee giving a team a bad call because the fans called him a cunt 20 years ago. Humans can be very petty.

They are going to try everything but facing up to the reality that the organisation is too close to current referees to actually do the job of keeping them accountable.

They’ve done this a bit in rugby and they tend to be worst refs. Not saying PGMOL have done a good job with a lot of their decisions but the job is so hard to do without mistakes whilst the criticism is so high that even if the quality of onfield reffing improved I don’t think people would have confidence.

It’s why there should be a focus on improving VAR to make it a streamlined and consistent process which PGMOL and everyone else has made a meal of
