This was one of the first games I played after building my own pc around 10 years ago, and it was really fun. Never finished it cause I was a chump then, but great game regardless.
I’ve seen many people, including people back when it was newer, talk about it being rather tedious. Alan Wake 2 was more streamlined, Alan Wake 1 was from another era.
I’ve played and enjoyed Alan Wake 2, but I don’t have interest in attempting the first one. Those that want to experience every bit of lore in the Remedy universe should definitely give it a try though.
The thirteen year gap between Alan Wake 1 and 2 really is felt. I still agree with you that the first game is not enjoyable mechanically, but the overall payoff of the Remedyverse is worth going through it. The story is good and has several memorable characters, and the enjoyment of Control and AW2 is much higher if you’ve played the entire back catalogue.
Alan Wake’s American Nightmare is actually a mechanically much more satisfying game than AW1, if you can stand the low budget nature of it being an Xbox Live Marketplace game.
