I don’t get it. Without any sort of posting guidelines, how is this any different than asklemmy? Both communities come from subreddits but over there, Askreddit was for general/public opinion questions and nostupidquestions was for questions you feel stupid for not knowing the answer to. Over here, both posts are acceptable. And this one seems to get way more vague “what do you think about X?” posts.

So what’s the point? Why have two separate communities on the same instance for the same thing? Most posts here are, frankly, stupid questions. The post that inspired this question was the one about Harambe. Come on lol

OK so… sounds like people are mostly using the community correctly then??

Based on the description and rules, I had thought NSQ was for genuine questions you don’t know the answer to and may feel stupid asking. For example, “How can I tell if a carrot is safe to eat or spoiled?”

Rules 4 and 5, to me would preclude the kind of validation or discussion seeking posts where the title is an opinion question and body is an essay answering the question and asking for reactions. However, as you point out this actually seems like the majority of posts lately.

I thought those type of posts goe in !asklemmy@lemmy.world which says it is for “open-ended, thought provoking questions” and has a rule clearly stating it is not a support community. Yet the mods/members there seem happy to take and answer general support questions.

Maybe I’m wrong, but it seems like a pretty common theme in the Threadiverse that most community mods are more interested in post activity than strict rule/topic keeping.

Yeah that’s the invitation I get as well. I don’t want to block this community because I liked its namesake but I’m gonna of it’s just going to be these trash posts non-stop

    If I understand correctly:

“Ask” is for more open ended questions (The vague “what do you think about” posts like you mentioned). Posts that are asking for a simple / single answer are generally removed for not being open ended. The question is more for discussion.

Here you can ask things that are less open ended and/or are looking for a single or simple answer.

That was my understanding as well but if you look at what’s getting posted here, that’s clearly not the case

Doesn’t really matter how you sort (active, top week, top month, etc), most of the questions are open-ended/opinion.

All of those strike me as questions that an asshole would call stupid or is otherwise inappropriate for ask. In order:

It probably has a simple process answer. Some people might read it as a mean spirited question.

Very specific. This one was also crossposted a lot so I wouldn’t read into the community choice.

This is about tv so probably would fit better in a tv community than ask.

OP hasn’t heard of inflation. Though even adjusting for that and “new content” the answer is probably a very simple “yes”. Not much to discuss.

Not sure if this is a can we or should we, but this isn’t really an ask question. The former has a very straightforward answer (yes, it’s the same protocol)

My take is no stupid questions is for questions you’re afraid to ask anywhere else. As long as it’s not hate speech masquerading as a question I ain’t downvoting you, no matter how stupid the question is.

Left over from the reddit migration where people created mirror communities, and ofen on mulitple instance e.g. !asklemmy@lemmy.ml and !asklemmy@lemmy.world which are both pretty active.

Unlike an asklemmy, I would expect question with a more clear cut answer. e.g. Asking why the sky is blue, or why is pink seen as feminine belong here, while asking about what do you do if you swap body with the last person you had sex with, or about other people first tattoo experience fits on the asklemmy communities

Its supposed to be like you say with reddit but some folks decided it was a challenge and fun troll to be as stupid as possible with them. I sorta liked SMCF but I blocked him because it was a nuisance in my feed.

    Communities are like people.

They don’t all have a purpose, and some that do, aren’t even very good at it.

    Correct on all counts.

Most stupid questions in nostupidquestions are indeed stupidquestions, but… that’s literally what its for.

With the frankly pathetic MAU numbers on the fediverse this stuff doesn’t matter very much.

Well, my understanding was that it’s not for ANY stupid question but for questions with actual answers that you feel stupid asking.

I felt stupid asking this because my understanding doesn’t jive with what I’m seeing. Which is 99% open-ended questions.

I think it does matter, though. Homogeny kills communities.

Community overlap has existed as long as the ability to create communities has. There’s no answer you’re going to get that will satisfy you in regards to your question like “Oh, you don’t have to be helpful when answering in !asklemmy”.

It’s not overlap, though. There are basically no posting rules here which makes it functionally identical. We took the subreddit name but not the rules that made it a good subreddit.

The best communities are the ones with guidelines. There is no such thing here so it’s just asklemmy2 which is… disappointing.
