I think this is part of the plan for them. The lack of shot creation in the starting five forces Wemby into a creator role to see what does and doesn’t work for him. Let him make a lot of plays, good and bad, and then use that info to mold the team around him moving forward. The Spurs see him as their long term #1 option, so it makes sense for them to start pushing him towards that now. It’s a very different situation in OKC for example, where they see Chet as a long term very good #2 or #3, so it makes sense to have him in that role surrounded by ballhandlers right from the start.
He’s been getting to exactly his kinds of shots in the paint, all of those pivots and fades and floaters and up-and-unders, they just haven’t been falling so far. Seems to me like it’s just a cold streak that he’ll get past, which will probably just end up balancing out with his 3pt% coming back to earth. It’s a very different feeling from Randle’s slow start, where he really was just chucking up terrible shots and needed to change his approach.
I feel like Nurk’s ability to be an offensive hub as an elbow passer is more modern. Ayton is a great call, his post repertoire of 15 different ways to get to an 8 foot hook or fade is classic 90’s.
Plus if he catches the ball more than one step away from the basket, he looks like a baby deer that’s about to get plastered by a semi truck. Very much a throwback compared to modern bigs who often have a lot of skill with the ball, as either a shooter or a passer.
They should review potential flops at the next timeout, just like they do for foot-on-the-line threes. It’s the best of all worlds: you assess the penalty in game, you get to check on replay to get the call right, and you don’t stop the game.
