Basically the title. Replace Murray with Trae. Contracts stay the same. Are the Nuggets better or worse now? I’m talking about Trae Young of the Atlanta Hawks by the way

In the past couple years, Trae Young’s has put up elite and incredible regular season stats and they dwarfs those of Murrays.

But when it mattered most (the playoffs) Murray’s stats have likewise been elite:

    2020 - ppg 26.5 ast 6.6 tov 2.8 on .626 TS

    2023 - ppg 26.1 ast 7.1 tov 2.5 on .586 TS

That’s arguably a top 3 playoff performance by a secondary star in the past decade++.

Strongly suggest you read this article. It goes into a lot more detail regarding the philosophy behind Denver’s roster construction.

    To answer your question though. Trae would make them significantly worse because;

    • He’s undersized

    • Doesn’t have an off ball game

    • Isn’t a good movement shooter

Denver’s roster construction focuses entirely on Jokic. All of those x4 guys are perfect complements to his skillset, and offset his weaknesses

They get way better. Everyone saying “trae young is worse off ball” like he doesn’t have to create 99% of the hawks offense. Murray has the benefit of playing off ball because of Jokic.

Also you can have more than 1 elite playmaker on the floor at a time and the offense would be insane. It’s why bron liked having rondo so much, having that sort of passing iq opens up the floor more and takes pressure off of you to do everything.

Trae young is criminally underrated here. Dudes a top 3 passer and lob threat, you put him on the nuggets and they become legit dynasty not just contenders

Worse. Dude is a black hole offensively and a major defensive liability. Shot 33.5% from 3 last yr. Jamal shot 39.8. And won a ring. Logo 3s and tik tok videos foolin yall

Cool, do you think he can be the first or second best player on a title team? Realistically? Give me a break. Also James Harden led the league in assists w 10.7. But he’s another bum

Considering Trae led his team to the ECF and was beating the NBA champion Bucks team before he got injured? Yes I do. And if you think James Harden is a bum then you really don’t know what you are talking about

Trae Young hangs around the half way line when he doesn’t have the ball and gets targeted on defense, Murray is good with or without the ball, gets targeted less on defense and already has good chemistry and is more than capable when it comes to the playoffs. I’ll take Murray, Trae may work but if it’s not broke don’t fix it.

Extending this question to a straight-up Trae for Jamal trade: both teams are worse. Murray is probably not as good a first option for a team like the Hawks and Trae is not as good a second option for a team that already has Jokic.

The Hawks maybe win 30 games with Murray as the number one option.
