Hello everyone,
Newbie here and trying to learn more about watches. wanted to get your opinions on what makes a watch good? Is it the movement? The brand? Or just purely aesthetics?
Right now I only judge purely on aesthetic only and I guess by the “Brand”. No clue on the engineering/movement/engine of watches. Any recommendations on where I can start learning?
Thanks in advance
They’re all good watches Brent
For me, I’m a big fan of iconic design. I think of watches as functional jewelry, so I like the ones with a design that is long-standing and specific to a company. This applies in lots of different ways to each brand, Big Eye for Longines to Royal Oak for AP. I value accuracy of the watch, so the closer it keeps time to 0 seconds gained or lost a day is better for me! This being said I love hearing my watch tick, and watching it sweep so must me mechanical.
Within these criteria there are a lot of options and you’ll discover quickly the price range affects what a good watch is for you. A 500 dollar piece with a micro rotor might be what really gets you going but you also might see the value in a 1500 dollar piece with a funky bezel that’s unique to the brand. It all depends, it should be fun that’s the main thing.
That you for the recommendations. Seems like I have lots of research to do before committing to a watch.
At this moment in time, I have my eyes on the Grand Seiko, SLGA019G. Something about that blue dial really makes me love this piece. Will have to see how accurate it is in the long run!
Love the Royal Oaks! But unfortunately, do not know much about them.
If you want to start delving into the engineering aspect I’d recommend watching watch repair channels on youtube. There are a lot of them, and besides being oddly therapeutic and ASMR-y they’re usually very informative.
Personal favorites are Nekkid Watchmaker, Red Dead Restoration and Wristwatch Revival but there are others just as good.
A good watch is one that is easily affordable and one that appeals to you to the point you cannot ignore it. Quartz, automatic and manual movements each appeal for different reasons to different people, per se none is necessarily any better than any other. Have fun learning about watches.
If it says A Lange & Söhne.
Just checked out their website, truly beautiful. Shame I won’t be able to afford most of their watches. 😂
Most of us can’t. 😩
a watch is good if it’s logo is a crown… haha jk
as long as you like it
If it falls in your range of acceptability, whatever that may be
You can assess by two level of criteria l: Tangible: such as complex function, such as annual calendar, GMT, moon phase etc… Or practicability such as metal bracelet for all weather use, water resistance, power reserve duration… Case material such as rose gold, platinum etc…
Intangible: such as history, does this brand/model carry historical significance such as Santos Dumont or Fifty Phantom… Special numbers, is the series number same as my lucky number or birthday… Brand personality, such as if the brand concur with my values…
Mix: such as dial, design… these are very much subject to personal preference which there is no rules. Someone likes sundial and some like simplicity…
If you like it and enjoy wearing it, it is a good watch. My favorite watch is the one I’m wearing that day.
Design, materials, construction details
If it suits you and you like it.
Also, if it doesn’t fall apart and is not a ripoff.
The rest is the myths and beliefs of yourself and your circle.
