I’ve been on a million medications for a million things, I get some fairly bad side effects sometimes but it’s almost always physical, and I’ve never had side effects from a painkiller before this, and I don’t know how unusual this is, but on tramadol I had the wildest mood swings of my life. I was on holiday when taking it, and I don’t know if I took too much or another medication fucked with it, but one minute I was doing what my mate called a “frog dance” in the pool in complete bliss laughing my head off, then I was angrier than I’ve ever been, then I was incredibly depressed in a very short space of time where literally nothing happened to cause any of it. I’d never experienced anything like it, it was horrible and I never want to take it again.

Tramadol also acts as an SNRI (similar to antidepressants cymbalta and Effexor) in addition to acting on opioid receptors. Might be why it felt odd.

I always wondered how could be people get addicted to painkillers, couldn’t see how it could happen, etc. Then I had an injury to my back and was prescribed Tramadol, then the epiphany occurred….holy fucking shit I was tripping balls for an hour after the first dose, then spent the next few hours counting down to the next dose.I was lucky that my back healed up pretty quickly so I wasn’t too reliant on them.I did have Tramadol on repeat prescription for a while till they were reclassified in the UK and removed from the list. Now the strongest you can get is some co-codamol which are ok but give you constipation lol.

Tramadol is known in helthcare as a “dirty drug” - it has such a wide-ranging and non-specific mechanism, that it hits a fuck-ton of receptors at once, so interacts with loads of other meds and causes load of side effects

It is really very much frowned upon by any doctor with much sense, a such
