I’ve been on a million medications for a million things, I get some fairly bad side effects sometimes but it’s almost always physical, and I’ve never had side effects from a painkiller before this, and I don’t know how unusual this is, but on tramadol I had the wildest mood swings of my life. I was on holiday when taking it, and I don’t know if I took too much or another medication fucked with it, but one minute I was doing what my mate called a “frog dance” in the pool in complete bliss laughing my head off, then I was angrier than I’ve ever been, then I was incredibly depressed in a very short space of time where literally nothing happened to cause any of it. I’d never experienced anything like it, it was horrible and I never want to take it again.

Tramadol also acts as an SNRI (similar to antidepressants cymbalta and Effexor) in addition to acting on opioid receptors. Might be why it felt odd.

I always wondered how could be people get addicted to painkillers, couldn’t see how it could happen, etc. Then I had an injury to my back and was prescribed Tramadol, then the epiphany occurred….holy fucking shit I was tripping balls for an hour after the first dose, then spent the next few hours counting down to the next dose.I was lucky that my back healed up pretty quickly so I wasn’t too reliant on them.I did have Tramadol on repeat prescription for a while till they were reclassified in the UK and removed from the list. Now the strongest you can get is some co-codamol which are ok but give you constipation lol.

Tramadol is known in helthcare as a “dirty drug” - it has such a wide-ranging and non-specific mechanism, that it hits a fuck-ton of receptors at once, so interacts with loads of other meds and causes load of side effects

It is really very much frowned upon by any doctor with much sense, a such

I really hate these articles and extreme reactions. I have debilitating chronic pain from a rare nerve problem and the only thing that helps are opiates. Yes it’s dangerous, but a lot of these people are taking much more than prescribed, that’s where it becomes serious. They are abusing it. And sure it’s easy to abuse. But so many medications, like antidepressants have serious withdrawal effects, as serious as painkillers.

The WADA announcement also had this about Tramadol:

Tramadol has been on WADA’s Monitoring Program and data gathered through that program have indicated significant use in sports.

Tramadol abuse, with its risk of physical dependence, opiate use disorder and overdoses, is of concern worldwide and has led to it being a controlled drug in many countries.

Research studies funded by WADA, as referenced in the Explanatory Note, have also confirmed the potential for tramadol to enhance sports performance.

WADA usually only gives a few months lead-time before a drug is banned, but I’m glad they gave 1-year+ bc they know how addictive Tramadol can be for some users.

FYI, this is how WADA decides what to ban; For a substance or method to be added to the List, it must be determined that it meets at least two of the following three criteria:

--> It has the potential to enhance or enhances sport performance

--> It represents an actual or potential health risk to the athletes

--> It violates the spirit of sport

Had/have nerve issues due to bulging discs. Dr put me on gabapentin and tramadol. Said tramadol was classified as a narcotic but wasn’t like opiates. All I can say is gabapentin and tramadol did nothing for the pain and other issues.

I’m glad I quit taking it, honestly at this point I try not to take anything if I can push through it. I spent way too long taking too much ibuprofen and that messed me up, last thing I need is long term opiate use and all the mess that goes with that.

Tramadol is a weird one. It is an opioid, but it’s also an SNRI (serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor). It’s actually not really safe to be taking with something like a TCA because of that (risk of Seratonin syndrome).

They’re still prescribed together quite often, despite that.

Yes, it’s been happening for a long time. As an example, let’s say a vital player is out injured but needs to “speed up the return date” because of a do-or-die season-making game, and voila those little magic pills and potions can do miracles.

Well no fucking doubt there are so many injuries and so many players are out of it. They’re hopped up on drugs when they get knocks and many of them apparently mood affecting drugs too.

Chris Kirkland did a heart breaking interview on Talkshite yesterday. He’s really open about his addiction, relapses and how he’s trying to stay clean. It really is reckless, the availability of these opiates.

On a less important reason for banning this, when cycling banned it, one of the reasons was.it was impairing riders’ judgement and they were more likely to make dangerous decisions in races.
