Yeah, I think these techs are dumb as hell too, but how is everyone on this thread missing this context? Every one of these dunk techs this year are from guys pulling up on the rim…
him pulling himself up is gathering the momentum and stability so he can drop before the other team is on the other side of the court
if he just flails back and forth until the energy dissipates they will have inbounded the ball already. this looks like a natural motion to stop the swinging
The rim isn’t a frictionless surface and Tatum’s arms aren’t unable to keep from swinging back with just his arm/shoulder muscles. Only reason his legs go up in the first place is because pulls up.
What the hell does friction on the rim have to do with the momentum of the swing? It helps to pull up to stop the momentum back and forth. Our schools have failed us.
Friction directly counters momentum. Only justification for his body moving going perpendicular the way it did would be if he was swinging in a frictionless surface. If you’re going to be a smartass at least remotely know what you’re talking about lol. Hell, here’s an example of Tatum going in with a lotta momentum holding without pulling up
It’s not just two extremes. He kept his arms tense for the first part of the back swing - which is allowed and necessary for safety - but then continued to unnecessarily elevate/hold himself through the second half of the back swing, resulting in an extra second of that unnecessary elevation.
Technically, no pun intended, you’re supposed to extend and lower yourself instead - again, after you’ve stabilized yourself on the first part of the back swing.
This call drives me fucking crazy. What is he supposed to do, fall on his back and hurt himself?
No, go flying into the Magic player and hurt both of them.
Come on, bruh… Lmao
I think he’s just not supposed to pull himself up on the rim, it’s not just the hanging

Ya, it’s a stupid rule. You can’t pull up but how else you supposed to stop swinging? It’s fucking physics.
You think you need to pull up to stop swinging lol?
It sure as hell helps. lol. Staying flats keeps the momentum going. You shift the momentum up and equalize stability. Basic physics.

Not dunk it in a way that puts his back parallel to the floor like players manage to do 100 times a night?
