  • OP a lot of people here are giving you sarcastic answers but I don’t think your question is a bad one. The true answer is two fold. First of all not every 7 footer is as nimble and fluid as Wemby and Chet. Jonas Valanciunas could practice his entire life but he won’t be able to make Euro step dunks like Wemby. He’s just not athletic enough. Secondly, when these big guys are young they can dominate just because of their size and athleticism. So their high school and AAU coaches specifically tell them to only dunk and rebound and block shots because that’s whats best for the team.

Guys built like Wemby and Chet physically are extremely rare, and even then guys who work hard enough AND are lucky enough to be in an environment that fosters their growth is basically a one in a million chance

    10/20 from 2 = 50% FG, but 20 points

    10/20 from 3 = 50% FG, but 30 points

This is why FG% is not a good stat. It doesn’t take into account the difference in value between 2s and 3s (and FTs). The FG% is the same yet scenario 2 is giving you 50% more points.

    TS% = points/(2 * (FGA + .44 * FTA)))

This basically tries to account for the different values that each way to score provides. Scenario 1 has a 50% TS. Scenario 2 has a 75% TS. Huge difference despite the FG% being the same.
