It’s an exclamation point on the most exciting play of the sport. You’re not directly taunting an opposing player all you’re doing is highlighting an exciting play you made. Just heard the Toyota Center get the loudest it has been all night while up 20 against the defending champs and a whistle takes the air out of the whole arena.

It’s gotten to a point where they’re putting the players in danger. They’re calling it when there’s traffic around them. Like what’s the point?

Is this over the Sengun one?

That was dumb. It’s correct to the letter of the law, but I don’t think it’s in the spirit at all. That was not an over the top celebration, and Sengun was going to hang on the rim that long regardless because he had so much momentum.

I genuinely thought this was only a college thing. Didn’t even realize you could get a tech for this in the NBA.

The one on Tatum seemed lame last night.

His momentum was carrying him in a direction, and he was waiting to swing back to land straight down.

Didn’t seem excessive. But I guess that’s subjective.

Although there’s definitely a celebration element, I feel like these guys are also just protecting their landings by waiting for things to clear out/ slow down

The nba is soft as fuck. Most players wouldn’t last 2 minutes in the nba of the 80s. And the refs would have been laughed at

Should only give tech if actual dmg is done. Give players warnings if it’s done.

Said this elsewhere, but a lot of the time the lift is to reduce momentum. You can see it on Tatum, he’s looking around and trying to avoid an unsafe landing. It’s more complicated than just showboating

No, it’s extremely easy to not lift the way most guys who are getting techs do. Like I said, go into a gym and run up to a pull up bar. It takes a lot more effort to pull yourself up rather than stabilize

Who rhe hell said it was about being easy? Dude said safety. Thanks for letting us know pull-ups take effort though haha. I always wondered myself.

The safety of it is because it’s easy. There is zero danger to hanging for an athletic person. The techs are not for hanging

People are defending the calls saying it’s for the sake of not bending the rim. So then I ask: what does a player do? When a player is in transition and they dunk, but swing forward because of their momentum, what is supposed to happen to not get a tech?
