Prime Minister Mark Carney has called byelections in the Toronto ridings of University-Rosedale and Scarborough Southwest and the Quebec riding of Terrebonne — races the Liberals will want to win to secure a thin majority government.
The byelections will be held on April 13, according to a news release posted on the prime minister’s website Sunday morning.
I want to like Carney, but this makes me uneasy.
What makes you uneasy about the short by-election date?
Carney having a majority makes me uneasy.
I’m a little surprised that he didn’t make the by-election period a little longer, but I’m not sure it will make a difference.
They’re riding high in the polls, so it makes strategic sense to get it done ASAP.
The NDP will select its next leader at the Winnipeg Convention held from March 27-29, 2026.
Just want to point out this would have given a opportunity for a potential NDP leader to gain a seat if they had some sense of urgency.
One of the thing people don’t bring up is how poorly ran the NDP is from the perspective of the backroom leaders.
The NDP doesn’t have a real chance of winning any of those seats, even with more campaign time. The next seat with a real chance is Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie, but they’re the incumbents there.
On to the majority!
We don’t need a majority government. We need national deliberation.
Realistically there are decent odds of terrebone going to the BQ, so they might still not get one.
Also I really don’t want carney to have a majority, he’s a progressive conservative, basically.
Whatever he is, I’m on board.
Ewww. I prefer if they have to haggle a little bit to pass things.
Will he start the new pipelines as soon as he secures a majority I wonder.
