Quoting the tl;dr in the linked article:
Samsung could be stepping up its game by offering seven years of major Android updates for the Galaxy S24 series, and the generous update policy might extend to other Galaxy flagships.
The Galaxy S24 series might also introduce charges for AI features like Live Translate and Pixel-like photo editing tools after 2025.
There’s speculation that users may need to sign in to their Samsung accounts for certain AI functionalities.
Samsung could easily win me over if their bootloader was unlock able.
Edit: Apparently it’s just US variants that can’t be unlockedWell, bootloader unlock toggle in developer options and fastboot eom unlock are available, am I missing something?
Not in the US.
Even the ones that are not carrier-locked?
Yeah, my S22 Ultra was carrier unlocked but the bootloader was not unlockable.
Strange, never seen such threads on xda. Could you provide screenshots of developer options around “Demo mode” setting?
Look for SM-S908U1 specifically. There are a few threads (like this one), but I think most US XDA users were just implicitly aware of how Samsung operated in the US. This was my first device from them and I was caught unawares.
I’m back on Pixel now.
It’s broken right now so I cannot check again to verify, but I had an S20 FE direct from Samsung in the US and none of those options were available in developer options.
@Gallardo994 @Osiris you can’t if you have Samsung with Snapdragon
I have Snapdragon variant of S23U (UAE version) and the bootloader is unlockable, are you sure it’s snapdragon specific and not just US-specific, or carrier-specific?
wdym, you just go to dev options and allow it, then reboot and do fastboot unlock.
press power button a couple of times (THIS WILL TRIP KNOX E-FUSE PERMANENTLY WITHOUT ANY WAY TO RECOVER), wait for data to be erased and boom it’s unlockedIt is tho?
They aren’t? My phone has an option to unlock it, tho I haven’t used it.
This
That is not the only big thing of pixels. To me it’s the openness. These are, ironically, the best and easiest phones to leave google. Or at least root them without the evergrowing hassles of each iteration of samcraps.
Noone would ever buy a PC if they wouldn’t get admin-access and mustn’t install Linux or whatever. With phones they managed to keep us out.
i always found it funny that the best method of having a privacy focused phone (without having significant tradeoffs like the pinephone) is to buy the phone from the company who violates privacy the worst, and flashing over it.
Noone would ever buy a PC if they wouldn’t get admin-access and mustn’t install Linux or whatever. With phones they managed to keep us out.
Realistically this only forms a tiny part of the population though, that’s pretty much the only reason why they’ve been able to keep people out.
If only a tiny part of people care at all, why even make it sooooo complicated and change every damn update? Let people that WANT control, have control. The others don’t care anyway and are scared enough by a “are you REALLY REALLY REALLY sure you know what you’re doing here?”-security-question.
I don’t pay 1000,- for a phone that isn’t mine, and I hate that this has become the default.
On the one hand, I could see bad actors taking advantage of easily rooted/unlocked systems. Maleficent resellers could also take advantage.
Definitely give me the warnings and let me know what could happen, but let me unlock it and own it completely.
That’s how it is usually when rooted. A confirmation is shown.
Or let it be set do decline by default and let the user explicitly change this. Problem solved. Of course malign intent wouldn’t be benefical with pre-rooted-no-confirmation-phones 😌
I agree with you but to play devil’s advocate, even for the simple issue of app sideloading on Android, there’s no shortage of dumb users out there that willingly bypass all sorts of warnings and install apps that are very obviously malware.
… And? Does a system have to be adjusted to the lowest denominator?
If you use a thing, of which you have zero clues about, and still fuck around with it, you get what you ask for. People don’t understand the slightest thing about the internet and still use it to go to “free” streaming-sites and whatnot.
I don’t say rooting-per-default. But an easy option to do so. And also unlocking the bootloader. It’s ok if it’s hidden. And let it come with 5 security questions á la “u rly sure?”. If someone doesn’t know what he’s doing, and still does it, and screws up, so be it. Charge the dumbnut in support.
Don’t shoot the messenger lol. I’m in agreement with you.
Oh sorry, that wasn’t meant to come across harsh 😊

“you can’t uninstall a system-app” (while trying to get rid of all the bloatware like mcaffee)
“you cannot upgrade to win8, but you can factory-reset your win7”
“you can only factory-reset 3 times, please call <insert company>-support!”
“you don’t have access to this file”
"defender has removed this ‘malware’ and there’s nothing you can do about it’
“You can’t install linux on this machine, this machine came bundled with Win7Home”
“you cannot install this program”
“you are not allowed to enter the bios”
“you cannot boot from this non-licensed device” (usb-stick)
etc.
One of these would probably do it :-)
exactly. the golden age was like 2015ish. great roms, easy to root, headphone jack, flat screens.
To talk about the article instead of ranting on about niche wants:
- 7 years of updates would be really good. Given how mature the hardware is nowadays, I can see a phone doing 7 years, save for the battery. Will Samsung be able to keep batteries in production?
- I’m less sold on the AI things, I guess that’s the buzzword now. AI AI AI everywhere. Also the two features mentioned are already in Google products, and I’d rather use those if I have to, unless Samsung pulls out a surprise and show that they are better at software development than Google is.
Is it repairability? Do I get root access to my own personal property? Maybe a headphone jack? How about IR blaster so my missing Roku remote doesn’t matter? Can we go so far as a replaceable battery?
Ok I got you. You don’t need to add anything you previously took away. Just give me a public apology for trying to make the phone repair industry die as collateral damage in your vendetta against Apple’s other screen supplier.

They want to be apple.
But they are not.
unless that comes with either a 600-700$ decrease in price or the readdition of a microSD card slot I’m not interested.
After phone storage got beyond 32GB, I thought I won’t need a microSD slot anymore. I was wrong and my 128GB are full again. Downloading shows and music in high quality needs quite a bit of storage, not to mention videos. As if to make matters worse, the OS takes up more storage than my first two phones had at all.
I never understood why anybody wouldn’t need SD access… There’s no way to have a reliable backup location in the event you can’t reach the internet for whatever reason.
Do you need all that on the phone?
for myself I have about 250 gigs of photo/video from my camera since I use it a lot. then about 50 gigs of apps, the lack of an SD card slot is my exclusive reason that I never upgraded from my s20 to newer models. It’s also why I’ve decided to ditch Samsung when my phone finally dies. I just have yet to find a decent alternative that works in my area
Dont take me wrong, i will never defend a manufacturer taking away features for profitens while increasing price… I feel most manufacturer fucks there customer because most people bend over and accept, and the more people do, the more they try to get away with. F hate the current tech climate
I can delete most of the 20 GB of video, as it’s also uploaded to my photo gallery (Immich). Maybe another 5GB of apps that aren’t necessary, which often need a few hundred MB (Paypal 0,5GB).
Anyway, an SD card would solve those issues. Hopefully 256GB will finally be enough storage.
Nah you’ll still run out. Just because you have more storage you start downloading more shows/filmsin higher quality.
Yea, who needs any of that on their phone?
Ive used almost 200gb on mine, but its mostly porn so 🤷, but i have a server to offload on if i want to
I’d say that makes you an outlier.
I know haha
Miss me with that AI bullshit, just make the screen completely flat on S24U and I’ll be more than happy.
Please. Who is interested in the curve anymore? I know they just do it for the people in the store.
I like the edge curve on my S9+ and Note 20U. Makes the bezels feel smaller and makes for a smoother swipe finger-feel.
But if I could trade that for removable battery/storage/repairability I would.

I’ve had screen protectors on all my edge-curved screens 🤷♂️

I guess I always use a case so for me it just feels like anothervpkace for dust to settle.
Wish granted, it is completely flat
Will they be bringing SD support back? I don’t get how people can use phones without SD support…
Which is funny because I don’t get why people want it. Unless you’re shooting a whole bunch of 4K video, i have no idea why it’s needed.
Here are a few examples of why someone would want it:
Not everyone lives in areas with great wireless connections.
Some are also limited to how much data they can use. So most store their music/movies/pictures on the local SD drive because they don’t use cloud storage.
I have a large music collection and store them on various SD cards in addition to my usually hard drives. When I want to listen to music I pop it in my Sony phone and listen to them. I refuse to use music streaming apps. I’ve tried SoundCloud, Spotify, and Google Music and each one didn’t have niche songs I enjoy. I Also there are various songs across various streaming services that I listen to but none all on the same service. I would rather own the files myself and put together my own comprehensive playlists. So I just pop it into my phone, enjoy the music I like, at no cost to me and I don’t have to worry about my Internet service in various places that I work out of that are deep in a building and don’t get any reception. I have lots of movie files and pornography that take up terrabytes. I need these on a Micro SD card because my phone’s internal storage isn’t large enough. I have another SD card with all my gba roms and saves that I can pop into my phone and play GBA games if I’m waiting around at the DMV, public spaces. Theen when I’m home I can pop that same SD card out with all my saves and roms and put it in my ez flash and play on my actual modded Game Boy Advance or into my modded a GameCube and play them without having to copy and paste save files, etc.
As a photographer i love it
Full disclosure: I didn’t read the article and only read the bulletin points. However, that last point really convinced me leave Scamsung. When I got my current S21 Ultra, I was bummed to find out that I couldn’t root it. I’m about to buy a Pixel 7 Pro and never look back.
7 years of updates is the tour of competition I like to see
Nickle and diming “AI” features isn’t.
I hope someone releases a build of LineageOS or any AOSP based custom ROM for the s23 series.
This takes time, there is only just now a lineage OS release for my S20 FE.
I mean, just have 65W+ charging. It’s the single biggest feature that neither offers.
It’s as if the whole world is split between those who could not live without it and those who haven’t yet experience it.
I was at an airport recently where my flight was delayed a few hours. There were so many anxious people waiting to use plug sockets, the fear of a dead battery making the atmosphere tense everywhere, you could almost smell it.
I waited for the queues to form when the flight was called to board and eventually a plug socket near my seat in the bar became free. 20% to 80% in 15 minutes, onto the plane and sorted.
Google, Samsung & Apple are useless for me until they have that.
Wouldn’t a power bank solve that issue? So far the airports I’ve been to usually have the power sockets completely hogged so I don’t even count on the chance that one is free. I usually bring along a power bank that gets me through 2-3 full charges of my phone.
really I’ve rarely seen airports that full even LAX but I also don’t travel during the busy times of the year
I am from Singapore so most of my flights are from Changi Airport which is quite packed I guess.
Or. https://www.ossia.com/cota
This is the future.
You don’t need 100% battery. You need a battery that doesn’t go flat.
Fast charging just buggers the battery. Too much heat isn’t great
With a wireless product like that you’re probably not even going to get enough power to charge your phone. Maybe sustain it.
Is there a timestamp ? I’m not watching a 1 hour vid.
Watt up and ossia have been around for a few years. Both have products on the ground. I have full faith in them. I understand that physics has a theoretically limit for power. More power requires more energy. Too much energy and you’ll burn a face off.
Yet these companies exist and have backers in the billions. Either they have a working system or they are great conmen.
Considering that we just saw hyperloop die with over 500 million invested… conmen it’s more likely than you think. The fact that people like you believe that physics even allows this to work is literally what allows them to continue the con. Qi charging barely works… inverse square law proves that we cannot do more than a few inches for anything that will be sufficient for a phone and the waste power to do it will be ginormous.
https://www.ossia.com/blog/cota-forever-magnetic-charger-wins-ces-innovation-award
It did win ces awards. Now that may be a good or a bad thing. But it’s not vaporware.
They have products out that work.
Okay… Where can I buy this product?
Notice that the company was started in 2013… And those “products” they have are literally impossible to purchase (I actually even signed up for “contact me!” to purchase one I’ll let you know if I get any information back… I’m willing to bet no.). This is sign 1 that this is bullshit. Notice that different materials show wildly different designs for products, none of which matches up to the actual product page. If something actually existed, it would look the same everytime we observed it… because you know… it’s real. Notice there’s no videos of the product actually working, just a produced video claiming it’s a live functions test… Except it’s a produced video. https://youtube.com/watch?v=HEfPgx51cas . The video claims that you can selectively stop charging things… That’s not how wireless antennas work at all. You can beamform to some extent, but if a device is near to another device that has an active beamformed lobe, you’re going to end up charging both(so they lied in the video). The video also uses a fuckton of terms RF terms really poorly. And they themselves admit it’s 1W of power. The shittiest of usb chargers charge at 12W (5v x 2.4amp). You will charge 1/12th the slowest charger, and isn’t actually even enough to trigger the “charging” notification in your notification bar. Further notice that the UI shows “zigbee ID” information. Zigbee is an already existing wireless mesh communications platform, typically used for IoT devices. The BEST zigbee controller chips already use 1/10th of your power budget. One of the major usages of Zigbee is controller lights and stuff… It’s much more likely that they built a “charging case” that is just an LED and battery that they can flip the light on and off to make this BS video.
It is vaporware when we’re talking about purchasable products… and you can’t/never could purchase it.
There’s been dozens of company’s claiming that this can be done. They’ve all failed. None of them have brought a viable product to market. Exactly the same story as hyperloop, where every company lied and failed to produce.
https://youtube.com/watch?v=lDdRVtka0Jg Other companies have even published ACTUAL attempts at “real world demonstrations”. Which have been proven to be bullshit. (starts at 17:40) I’m sure youtube will link you to the other dozens of these products that EEVBlog themselves have debunked by walking through the materials and calculations. If you can point to even ONE Thing that OSSIA is doing different than the other 10 companies doing the same damn thing (poorly) then I’ll eat every fucking work I’ve written. But it’s all bullshit, putting 500W into a sending unit and only 1W comes out the other end, and often times barely.
Now the best part! The FCC limits transmission power anyway! You want to charge 10 cellphones at their rated 12W slow charge? You actually CANNOT. FCC doesn’t allow an antenna in any form to push that much power without licensing. And I mean amateur radio type licensing. Snippet stolen from someone else that I copied a long while ago:
Go look at the FCC rules for a 500W 15MHz transmitter and safe operating distance from the antenna … According to the FCC an amateur 20M station (14 MHz) operating at 500W you need to be 3.4 meters away from the antenna at a minimum … Which means you cannot have the antenna anywhere in the average sized room without subjecting humans and pets to dangerous levels of RF power. This also assumes a 0 db gain antenna (omni-directional). If you are using a gain antenna such as forming it into a beam or making it directional the the safe distance increases to 4.8M for a 3 db gain, 6.8M for a 6 db gain, etc.
There is no way you are going to develop 500W of power at 15 MHz and get it past the FCC … If you drop it to 100W you’d still need a 1.5M safe operating distance so you’d be lucky to get 5W at 15 MHz approved for something sitting under your desk … And that doesn’t even take into account RFI problems if you don’t have a clean Sine wave and are radiating harmonics and perhaps jamming your neighbor’s garage door opener …
So if you can’t even be near the transmitter for fear of actual danger to the subjects… How the fuck are you going to charge things that are in range if you’re not even allowed to be in range?
(I have nothing to add here, I just want to say that I deeply appreciate you and that people providing exhaustive breakdowns of this nonsense is incredibly heartening to see)
Gosh and golly, a CES award! Man! Thats just so impressive! Jeeze if they’re doing that well, they must have a really good product! Maybe next year they’ll have refined it so much they win a red dot design award, that would surely be their Fifty-To-One moment! Or maybe even, dare to dream, a JD Power award! Talk about underdog victories!
I know. Ces award. It actually got 7. I don’t know what that says.
In any case. It has products and is bringing another to market. Will it work ? Your guess is as good as mine. Companies have partnered so they obviously think it’s worth while. If the product is a flop then can say for sure.
Valid. But there are products out there.
People like me believe. Ho there. Back your arse right up.
I follow along with what I am told. If someone says they can do it. Show that it can be accomplished. You pop up and say actually it can’t and here’s why.
Believing either of you is a toss up. Both come to the table with evidence.
At the end of the day the product will either work or it won’t. Man went to the moon. 100 years ago they’d say can’t be done. 200 before that and the ability to stream video over the internet would get you burnt for being a witch.
I’m sure science had fundamental laws but things change. Those laws aren’t concrete. They are shown to exist but that doesn’t mean things can’t alter or impact those.
I can choose to believe.
I have invested in wattup. I think it’s possible. Disney showed that it was possible. Just that an entire room was electrified and that you’d die of you went inside. We can mess with it.
I follow along with what I am told. If someone says they can do it. Show that it can be accomplished.
Except they haven’t shown anything. There’s literally nothing on the market that works. Literally nothing. Over a decade of this “Technology” being developed and there’s nothing to show for it.
Believing either of you is a toss up. Both come to the table with evidence.
What? What evidence have they shown? The only video that I can find from any of these companies “working” is them lying to you and using like 20 modules to come up with the 5v of power then need to trick a phone into thinking it’s charging by pulsing a capacitor.
At the end of the day the product will either work or it won’t. Man went to the moon. 100 years ago they’d say can’t be done. 200 before that and the ability to stream video over the internet would get you burnt for being a witch.
The difference is that nobody said that rules of physics and science outright disagrees. You cannot beat the inverse square law. This is much like the laws of thermodynamics. You don’t just “change” them. The fact that people like you seem to thinks that laws of physics change is actually disturbing.
I’m sure science had fundamental laws but things change. Those laws aren’t concrete.
Uh what? Yes they are. You think that gravity just changes on a whim? That we discover some stuff and magically gravity will turn left? This is absurd.
I can choose to believe.
That’s true. But that doesn’t make it any more possible to actually do.
I have invested in wattup. I think it’s possible. Disney showed that it was possible. Just that an entire room was electrified and that you’d die of you went inside. We can mess with it.
https://seekingalpha.com/article/4031486-energous-admits-wattup-unsafe-for-humans-and-cannot-get-fcc-approval This was published 7 years ago… They admitted it themselves… but you still “believe”. Right? I hope you didn’t invest much. That money has basically been lit on fire.
Did you look at the website? They have products in the market. They have them in warehouses. They are sensors using fractions of power. But it’s still a product.
The videos showing it, the patents and again products.
They do change though. In space things work differently. And they also don’t change but have been incorrectly observed. The way we see things. Experiment and then prove that when x does this y does this. But sometimes x does something because r was present but we didn’t know that.
Not saying laws change. That whoever first theorized it wasn’t correct. There was something else.
But this is a pointless argument. You are set in your ways. Science is great. I’m still invested in it and will purchase the product when it comes to market.
I’ll wait. Check out reviews and then go from there. Either they have managed to overcome the limitations or they haven’t.
If they haven’t then company goes bust. End of story. Another scam to add to the list.
I have invested in wattup
Well that just about cinches it.
Well it means I put money down on an investment.
I’m sure you told the same thing to Tesla investors.
Can’t be accomplished.
Time will tell
So, when is the camera tech finally going to be good enough to make the camera flush with the phone body?
Any case should already make the cameras flush

Tizen or whatever they call it now is garbage. That is why I have a pixel.
Do you mean the custom chips they make, exynos? Tizen is their operating system for televisions.
Their OS for phones. It was also called Tizen at one point I think.
Literally never. At best they had a UI called TouchWiz which has long since been replaced by OneUI.
You spelt TV wrong.
Their watches also used to be based on Tizen before WearOS
You had a Samsung which runs Tizen? No wonder it sucks.
Fuckin hate my Pixel.
As someone that is interested in getting a pixel to use GrapheneOS I’m interested to hear what you hate about it. I’m still a little bit on the fence about it.
If you’ll be slapping a different OS on, I’m sure it’ll be fine. The hardware leaves a bit to be desired at the MSRP price point, but they depreciate pretty hard- a used one might be a win. I just know that it’s a touch buggy for me, especially with StOcK aNdRoId and all.
