Today’s game is Doom 64. Why 64? I’m not exactly sure why but it was the one I felt most attached to playing. I own Doom 2 on the switch, but I hate sharing screenshots off that thing (it feels like advertising even if not expressly stated and they’re just a pain to download overall. Plus: I hate compression), but 64 I guess just seemed more interesting to me.
I played through the first 2 levels, and compared to 2 or even something like quake (which I think it’s similar too), I think this game unsettles me. Like. 2 feels like your standard rip and tear. But doom 64? I feel like there’s something almost going to pop out from a corner and get me. It’s a weird feeling.

Not helping this feeling was the second level. I struggled to get through it and killed everything. I was left alone listening to the ambience for quite a while. And I’m embarrassed to admit it’s partly because I didn’t realize I could run.
My general feeling of discomfort aside, I like this. Something about the way Doom 64 looks appeals to me more. It’s entirely possible it’s a placebo, but also I can’t really reference it right now as I’m writing this.

I like the almost bright aesthetic some of the rooms have. I almost thought I was missing textures at first, but I think that’s just how this thing looks. Also. I love escalators. So that’s bonus points from me.

I also like the enemies, and not to come off as sadistic, but especially the way they die. There’s something oddly charming about the way they look and the way they crumble into a sprite on the ground.
Overall I kind of liked Doom 64 though. The uneasy feeling was interesting. It’s been a while since I’ve been unsettled by a game I (assume) wasn’t trying to scare me. And the gameplay is doom. I think if I had a little more perseverance I could probably play through Doom 64, but my hand eye coordination hasn’t been the best lately and neither has my sleep, so maybe no major binges any time soon

Excellent choice
Yeahhhh Doom! Awesome that you picked it for the 666th screenshot!
I didn’t expect quite so many people to ask for it. The number almost flew over my head until a few people pointed out I should play Doom
I came here to say the same thing. I’ve been following this journey out of pure curiosity and love the commitment.
I was waiting for this day too, didn’t disappointed me :)
It was highly requested. (Well, at least there was more than one comment asking for it 😁)
Props for keeping it up for this long!

Damn, was hoping for the Barbie game for the 666.
Doom’s cool too.
I almost considered doing a two game thing lmao but I had no idea which Barbie game it was. I tried searching and just saw a whole bunch of them
The Christian devil day screen shot.
Doom 64 is really good. I played it recently and the atmosphere was very unsettling compared to Doom 1 and Doom 2. Since the level design is very much on brand with the former games I can’t call it a Doom 1-2/Doom 3 mix, but the atmosphere is different, more in line with Doom 3
Thank you for agreeing with the unsettling atmosphere! I was worried I was just weird lmao.
Definitely not. Haha. I even had a friend playing with me for a while because of it. They nailed the ambience on that one. And some of the monsters are very shadowy
I had no idea they had so many sequels. I think I did not even complete doom 3!
It’s sooooo boring
I’m assuming you used the KEX port version? It’s great but lack of modding capacity let me down a bit since Doom’s all about custom WAD maps and mods
If KEX is the version on Steam, yeah. I almost did the custom version specifically because I saw something on the House of Leaves WAD and was interested, but I didn’t want to mess with all that stuff so I just stuck too the one I had
Yeah it should be KEX version if on Steam
I think Doom 1 + 2 have in-game modding capacity on Bethesda network as well, along with other KEX remastered games (Quake, Quake 2)
Bump for support!
I hate doom! not personal, I dont like FPS and I get dizzy on that type of camera.
I looove games with a first person camera, but I’m kinda sensitive to low fov (field of view) and usually need to adjust it to make FPS games playable, otherwise it’s vomit town.
I remember that Doom (2016) on the PS4 with it’s super low default fov managed to make me feel motion sickness in less than 30s of gameplay. Impressive!
The camera is really what throws me off. I’m so used to having vertical control
I’m playing doom64 at the moment. I get stuck on a lot of the levels not knowing where to go. I’m a few levels off the end and my favourite enemy is this guy https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/doom/images/e/e0/Mancubus64_sprite.png/revision/latest?cb=20190116135049
He reminds me of Ganon from LoZ kind of if you strapped some guns to his hands and threw him into hell
