The term “digital sovereignty” is popular but where are the jobs? The EU and its member states are supposedly unlocking billions in funding to support it, but when I search for “digital sovereignty” jobs, I find next to nothing.
Is digital sovereignty really happening or is just being hyped with nothing behind it?
I am a software developer in Germany and have also been wondering where are the jobs for creating the Linux software to replace Windows software. So far I have seen hardly any.
Because digital sovereignty isn’t a job title, it’s a procurement strategy: The hiring shows up as cloud engineers, cybersecurity, Linux, semiconductor, networking, public sector IT and compliance roles. The money is real, but it mostly flows through existing industries rather than creating a shiny new profession.
Digital sovereignty is a concept, it literally just means software developed in europe. GNOME and KDE have both received funding in the name of digital sovereignty, for example.

It is happening as a transition with existing personnel and maybe new contracts with consultants and agencies. They might offer new jobs under terms like “cloud native developer” and put a later emphasis in European technologies.
Look into firms that do government consulting. They are the ones getting the contracts.
Most of them are American.
No, it’s not hype, but in many cases a straight out lie. We are governed by corrupt sell-outs while defunding education and a 24/7 stream of brain rot has the majority of voters blame (often illusionary) minorities while getting openly fucked by corporations and their governments.
They cry about digital sovereignity while buying solutions from Microsoft’s or Google’s EuRoPeAn cloud solutions that are a scam with zero sovereignity.
They talk about sovereign chip development while defunding education and research and subsidizing Intel.
They lament about a need for sovereign AI while just pushing surveilance and abolishing data protection so they can sell all our data to the big US companies… and now Palantir on top.
Oh and of course we totally need more US run data centers for those “sovereign” cloud and AI solutiuns somehow.
I’d look into the services supported by funding institutions and look at their career portal.
I don’t think it really is a job. Maybe a “european cloud” consultant or something. It is mostly a management decision and that creates shifting priorities for existing network and application admins. Also devops and cloud engineers.
