I know the alt text is provided for the visually impaired, but that alt text is really no help at all without a huge amount of context, lol

I can just imagine my buddy scrolling through and coming upon this meme and having a screen reader read out the alt text, and my buddy asking “who the fuck is Wesley? Who the fuck is a traveler?“

That again, he’s not a Star Trek fan, so he’s probably not subscribed to this community

      Sir, this is Ten Forward.

If you don’t know who Wesley and the Traveler are, you’re probably not going to get the meme anyway. Do you go to every community with memes you don’t understand and complain they didn’t give you context? Why is it any different that the Alt text doesn’t explain the context than any given meme not explaining the context. (Yes, it’s for the visually impaired using screen readers. It’s called accessibility, look it up.)

FWIW, on the weekends, my “Subscribed” feed can jump from ‘8 seconds ago’ to ‘2 years ago’ pretty quickly, so it’s not inconceivable that I might switch to the ‘All’ feed and discover something new and wonderful that I may not understand. (personally, it’s the torrent of trans communities and the onslaught of genz trans anxieties that, as a genx gay man, I try to reconcile with my very 90s experience. I find it extremely fascinating, not only sociologically, but in trying to better understand the extremely vast LGBTQ community that I am a part of). Anyway…

The point I was trying to make is that I was amused by what I was describing, not being critical of it. It’s a sociological wonder, and I found it interesting. I wasn’t trying to be a bitch.

Also the context that a few hours ago, lemmy.world’s backend shut down for unknown reasons and it took them a while to bring everything back online.

        Oh, honey buns— as a piefed.world user…

lol. You don’t know how good you have it. I am sure there our instance admin tries his best, but servers will be servers…

        ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Is PieFed.world unstable or something? I am genuinely interested in hearing more about that as I had considered making an account there.

From what I understand, this particular instance has been experiencing a lot of different types of attacks and attempting to mitigate a lot of AI traffic, so it’s been going down a bunch of times recently while the admin has been attempting to do with that sort of thing. Not that it is unstable per se, but the admin has been taking the instance off-line frequently for a few hours at a time in order to update the server and tweak it in order to deal with several extraneous issues.

It’s a much smaller instance than the main piefed instance, piefed.social.

Over the past month, however, it’s up time has been much better. I like this instance.

Ah that makes perfect sense. LW also gets a ton of hate, as too does PieFed, so I can well imagine trolls going so far as attacking it (obviously that’s my conspiracy theory hat on, but who knows - although “death to the infidels” does seem to me like it may include some light hacking of infidel-owned machines if they can get away with it… - yet it being purely due to AI scraping is unfortunately equally plausible)

What gives me pause about the instance is that the list of Categories I thought was empty for many months, and now is still quite light. Like, whether I would use any of those or not, it seems a signal that the instance admins have other priorities than to get around to such minor matters. Now I begin to see a bit of why. That earlier exceedingly unfriendly disclosure of code vulnerabilities - with zero advanced notice - may have also caused a lot of stress too.

Oh… oh, my, this is not at all what I was trying to describe. Wow this is such a vivid and incredibly imaginative narrative, I cannot possibly conceptualize that this could be true. No, I was referring to multiple DDoS attacks and AI bot scrapers overwhelming the server. Nothing so florid or colorful. No, much more mundane. sorry to disappoint you!

Lemmy may be argumentative and adversarial, but outright black hat cyber warfare? Ha ha ha ha… no.

But what a picture you painted! consider writing a sci-fi novel!

Again, this is a very small instance. When it gets overwhelmed with a gigantic amount of traffic suddenly, it doesn’t handle it well, and the admin will take it down to make tweaks before bringing it back online, and sometimes that that will take a little while. but they’re very proactive, and that’s a good thing!

It makes sense! Even though the result is even sadder as it means that literally all websites will be exposed to the same form of attack - the web is truly an unfriendly place these days:-(.
